I stayed in the Pioneer(now called Sohotel) in 2000. It was clean, basic, cheap and central. Not that close to Times Square - probably a 20 minute (interesting) walk IIRC.

We stayed in the Milford Plaza hotel, which is really close to Times Square (only a block or 2 i think). It was reasonable (and fairly cheap), though the room we were in looked like it was a little overdue for a redecoration.

The new Westin at Times Square is ok. The rooms are a bit tight, but it's new and modern and well located.

There's a Marriott on Times Square which is good. Always know what's you're getting with a Marriott. But you wouldn't get me staying in Times Square - there are better places. Somewhere near Central Park would be my preference.

The Roosevelt's nice, stayed there twice now. I think it's a bit pricey if you're not on a package deal - you'd have to check.

The Sheraton has decent rooms as opposed to a lot of hotels with TINY rooms. One of the better choices I suppose.

Stayed in The Plaza which is on the corner of central park, very nice but maybe a bit pricey for the size of room (was suposed to be a suite too), very clean/grand hotel still though.
