Am trying to track a film down that I watched as a youngster.

Here's the general story:- old guy sees his family rundown by a truck as they park up on some road. He moves to a huge house which is haunted by a disabled child that drowned in an old style victorian bath in an attic.

How long ago are we talking here? 70's? Was it in colour or B&W.

In colour set in the early 80s and yes I remember a scene where he wakes from a banging noise in the house. Quite eerie

I've found it. Called the Changling.

'George C. Scott stars as a man dealing with the tragic loss of his wife and daughter. He relocates and rents out an old house that belongs to a local historic society while teaching at a nearby college. While in the house, strange noises and occurances begin to occur. After research, psychic help, and "ghostly" help, he begins to realize why the ghost is trying to contact him. '
