Question Getting rid of the smell of cat pee.

Gertie decided to mark her final journey, by peeing on my passenger seat, any ideas what I use to get rid of the smell, or should I bin the seat & look for another ?

Human **** should neutralise the cat's ****.. so I suggest you go out immediately and **** all over the seat

Alternatively, a good soaking with Fabreeze may do the job

Sorry to hear about your cat.

A hot topic for me I'm afraid! Our bloody cat refuses to go outside atm.

Dettol Disinfectant Spray is good - they sell it for de stinking trainers, but seems to do the job. Also would recommend Febreeze.

Wipe the seat down with a disinfectant Mix (Zoflora) is jolly good. Wait for it to dry then use either of the sprays.

I'd also get a good airfreshener for the car too. A few weeks/ applications and all shold be well again.

Hi,

Normal house hold carpet cleaners and odour neutralisers will get rid of the smell for humans, but a cat will still be able to smell it. If kitty rides in the car frequently you will need to get rid of the smell completely or there is a good chance s/he will do it again. Your local vet (and some larger supermarkets stores in the pet food litter etc sections) will have a spray that will completely eradicate the smell.

Enjoy

Sorry about your cat.

Pet stores or garden centres will sell you a product (hand operated spray type thingie) to get rid of the smell and disenfect it. I cannot remember the name of it but any 1/2 decent one should sell it from their pet department and it works.

Cool

On a more serious note....As a former owner of a cat (who once pissed in a corner of a wardrobe ) I fully appreciate how long the smell lingers ..

Baking Soda is the cheap and easy remedy but it needs to be applied to a still damp patch, if its dry, its no good.

Gertie decided to mark her final journey
Sucks when they do that eh, damned buggers, hurts so much more than the little pee

Interesting tip about the baking soda (sodium/natrium bicarbonate).

The smell is 99 % ammonia, so you have to find something that reacts/neutralizes ammonia.

anyone know the reasons why they do this? Male cat **** to mark their territory, females rub their scent. Why do they need to mark their territory inside, and is our female cat really a male cat....

Homebase and the like will hire you a "Rug Doctor" machine. Not suggesting that you borrow one, but the "Odour Remover" spray which is sold to work with the machine is an enzyme-based formula which does a pretty good job of neutralising the smell. Spray it on quite liberally, put a damp towel over the area and leave for a while to work. The reason for the damp towel is to keep the area damp because the enzymes can only work in a liquid situation.

As to why the little b*ggers do it - there are a huge range of possible reasons but most of them boil down to either territorial behaviour or reactions to stress - quite often a bit of both. Cat psychology is a complex and bizarre thing...

No I was being completely serious, Baking/Bicarbonate Soda is the best. If your pet has just pissed somewhere, or if its still damp stick a pile of soda over it. Completely cover it all with large heap of soda, and leave it for a few days, then just hoover it up. I promise you there will be no odour left.

Er, for toms at least it's phenylacetic acid. That's why a base like bicarb (sort of) works.

Dunk, sorry to hear that. Have you still got the kitten?
We use dettol on the times that the litter tray has been missed (god knows how, its big enough!)

Stef - one our our neighbours managed to get the gender of their cat wrong when he was a kitten and they only found out when they took it to the vet to be spayed. Imagine their face when the vet said it was male!! We feel very sorry for him as he's quite big and stuck with a name of Tiffany (no wonder he looks like he's bearing amassive grudge!!!)

White vinegar is meant to be good... stinks for ages though. A few people I know have used Napisan mixed with water [the stuff that you soak baby's terry nappies in] as that's a neutraliser. Then just use an upholstery cleaner + disinfectant/Febreze or whatever afterwards.

Cant give any better solution for odour removal , but I find the best way to ensure the cat does not **** again in the car , is to get a nice helping of hot english mustard on the end of your finger and poke it up the cats ****.

Tonic Water is very good. I used this on carpets and the Sofa when Zeus had a spraying session which was on a nightly basis for a while.

For people reading this Zeus sprayed pretty much every night for 3 months and we couldn't work out why he had a problem. Eventually it was traced to our new floor cleaner that was ammonia based. Every time we cleaned the floor he assumed another cat had marked the house so he went round remarking it !!!!! New cleaner and no spraying since

If you want to keep cats away from an area slice a qtr of Lemon or Orange. Citric based products drive them nuts.
