Seems a bit severe to pursue him now - 40 years since he deserted!

They've got to go through the motions, just to deter any other would-be alleged deserters.

Looking into Hammy's crystal ball, I would suggest that there may be some convenient technality, which means that you the US can't have him, in the end.

The American goverment have so far been unable to give positive proof that he actually deserted. They supposedly had some notes he left behind saying that was his intention but these have never been found.

Its likely they will back down from any formal military charges. Both the American and Japanese goverment are more interested in any information he can provide about life inside North Korea.

They just want a quiet chat
