Have you got a budget in mind?

If the worst comes to the worst, there's a couple of travelodges to fall back on which are both about 4-5 miles from Dalkeith.

 

Oh, and how far are you prepared to stay from Dalkeith.

Without offending Dalkeith residents (!), it's not the best place to use as a base. If you're prepared to be about 20 miles from Dalkeith, you could either base yourselves in the Scottish Borders in somewhere like Peebles, or choose somewhere in East Lothian such as North Berwick (has 20 minute journey train service direct into middle of Edinburgh city centre should you & the missus want to see Edinburgh).

North Berwick is a nice coastal town, with plenty to see & do.

 

I agree with Imlach. North Berwick is a beautiful small town, If you want a village then on the same road from NB to Edinburgh there is also Aberlady and Gullane- both have B&B plus Inns.

 

I love North Berwick Some fantastic roads for test driving your new car too

 

Not stayed here so can't couch for it, but nice enough hotel in Aberlady....Aberlady is a lovely coastal village.
