Decent Car Hire Companies in the USA
Trying to go to Los Angeles in July.
Where can I get a decent car from to hire? Don't want the usual American crap.
Thanks
Jay

What type of car are you after? think you'll be lucky if you get anything other than the usual yank cars (intrepids, taurus, sunfire, crap like that).
If you're wanting a european car, BMW, Merc, Audi, etc... then you'll probably pay a lot for it.
Probably worth talking to the following hire companies:
Enterprise
Alamo
Budget
Avis
Thrifty
Hertz
Dollar

Hello
Markus about covered all the rental companies! They are all much the same to be honest. When I was travelling to America all the time I used to try different ones to see if they were any different. But no. All the same can't go round corners Americanised cars.
Steve.

They're all doing to give you a ****e car as a standard car
Hertz have Volvos and Jags but, surprise surprise, they're not standard cars. Personally, I avoid Dollar. YMMV. Enterprise will let you select which car you want (within the class you've paid for) off the lot. If you pay for the ****e class, you'll get a range of ****e to pick from.
Mustangs are fun for a while. Rent one of those. Haggle at the counter for a soft top one - if you're lucky they'll give you a white one with a white roof and you can mince around in that.

Got back from LA on Monday . We used Budget and got an upgrade as the first car they offered us had no front number plate. Originally they were going to give us a Mondeo size car, but they didn't have anymore in stock, therefore we got one about the size of a 5 series Beemer for no extra charge.
The pick up/drop off point is about 1/4 mile from the airport and they have several shuttle coaches running backwards and forwards. Although I'd imagine most of the companies would have the same.
BTW, petrol was $2.49 per GALLON right on the door step of the airport. If you haven't driven in the States before enjoy Freeway 105 and 10
