Default wtf??? cancelled a credit catr and...

fookin ******** i cancelled a card a few months back, i recived the letter telling them that it was terminated
ie no credit agreement etc is contracted betweeen ourselves

now 2 months later i recieve a statement from them with 15.99 from aol on it!!! well after the termination date, i call them ask what the **** and they say its because i never told aol cancelled so aol can keep taking money from my account
how the hell is that possible when no fookin account excists in the first place

my thinking is screw em, i have no legal obligation to pay and they cannot penalise me

or am i wrong?
ps another statement came today with another aol bill, so thats 30 odd quid now
i didnt pay last months and they havent added late payment charges etc so obviously they cant

anyone in the know suggest somin??

AFAIK you would have to cancel your agreement with AOL first. Unless AOL refund the money to the CC company, you are going to end up having to pay.

This is why you should never sign one of those "regular payment" agreements on a credit card. Some cheeky companies disguise them as "direct debits" when they're not. A proper direct debit (one that comes out of your bank account) can be cancelled with the bank. A credit card regular payment agreement can only be cancelled by the originating company, even if you cancel the card

IIRC AOL are one of the prime perpetrators of this. Have you cancelled your agreement with AOL? They're not trying to stitch you up -- their cancellations departments is just damned inefficient.

Could you not report the payments they have taken after cancellation as fraudulent to the credit card fraud dept as AOL (or any other company doing similar) does not have your continued permission to take them.

I am in a similar situation, I let a friend of mine use my CC number to sign to Freeserve, I wish to revoke this permission now, he is useless and hasn’t changed the payment method with Freeserve, they wont act on my request to stop billing my CC, and my CC company say they cant refuse to pay Freeserve, WTF??

I was wanting to cancel card to stop the billings, think the solution may be to report card lost / stolen and get a new card number, Freeserve will not have that new number so cant bill it and the old number will be totally blocked.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Exclamation

Its called a "continuous payment authority", and not recommended!

See The BBC News for some info.

There is a discussion thread here as well

Keep records of ALL your communications with AOL, your CC company, bank, whoever - it might take some time to sort out, so make sure you don't forget/lose anything.

In this scenario are debit cards classed the same as credit cards?
