I often go down a road near where I live where there is a stretch that was resurfaced fairly recently. Back then it acquired a new extra-quiet smooth road surface. They closed the road for a couple of days to give it the full treatment.

All the other roads round here are full of holes, but not that one, smooth as silk.

Then yesterday I went down that way and it had been converted to a series of randomly-spaced piles of loose chippings with two big ruts each way, flying stones and bare bits. Too late to turn round, so the Scoob got treated to numerous dings and sticky flying chunks. I must have lost several fillings as well.

I'm not expecting to understand the logic of it, just struggling with the bigger question... why ?

Because it's cheaper and easier to f*ck up the good roads, rather than bring the bad ones up to scratch
