Freeview - what wideband aerial?
Have got a Freeview box for my birthday today but my post code requires a wideband aerial apparently.
So what I want to know is what one to get, how much it is and where to get it from and is it easy to install yourself or does it need to be aligned by an aerial fitter?
TIA

I haven't even taken mine out the box yet so have no idea how to set them up yet. Got a Pioneer one and just did a search on its model in google and it came up with loads of stuff about it. How about searching google for your model and seeing if you get any instructions on how to re-scan? If you have only half the channels does this not mean you might need a wideband aerial too?

The reason you may only be getting half the channels could be down to the aerial. Some of the multiplexes are up in the high end of the UHF range. Traditionally, terrestial tv channels are on 21-69 as they call them. Some of the multiplexes are up towards 69, and it'll be these ones your box is having trouble with - your aerial is probably not up to receiving these ones well....
I think the BBC have an engineering webpage which details which channels are on which mulitplexes in your area...so you'll be able to correlate for yourself if the channels you cannot see are the ones in the 60-69 range.

I also wouldn't bother investigating a new aerial until you've plugged your box in, done a scan, and seen what you can get. If you're only missing the multiplexes with some iffy shopping channel or music channel, prob not worth a new aerial.....
Once you've had it a few weeks, I can guarantee the only things you'll use will be the normal terrestial channels, and :
BBC3
BBC4
BBC News 24
Sky News (perhaps)
BBC Parliment if you like watching Election 74/79/83/87/etc during recess
Radio stations if that's your thing...

Don't know how up to date this page is, but it will show you where in the channel spectrum you should be receiving the multiplexes....(assuming you know the name of your transmitter) :
http://www.bbc.co.uk/reception/tv_tr...git_full.shtml
...and the channels on each multiplex are listed here :
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/terrestrial/mux/
Should be enough for you to work out if you do/don't need a new aerial in the meantime....(ie, if you can't receive the channels on Mux D, you may decide you'd never watch the channels on Mux D anyway!).

LOL @ you two
Well the TV stuff will be useful if I can work out wtf it means and it helps me avoid having to get a new aerial Guessing here I am going to have to do a lot of reading on it before I know what its going on about.
FB you have with out doubt been helpful over financial matters even though my own circumstances have taken 7 months before anything has progressed on that front
So I would say you both win on different areas of help
SN is indeed a wealth of knowledge and help and thats why I use it so much, someone else is helping me out on something else at the moment as well and someone helped me out big time with a bust washing machine over on the DIY forum which saved me a packet in call out fees so with out this place i'd be a lot more out of pocket!
Thanks SN

I'm also worried about TopUp Tv. AFAIK, it uses the same easily hackable technology that OnDigital (ITVDigital) did. ie, anyone with a small RS232 smart card programmer can access these channels for free.....oops.
.....of course, I'd never advocate such airwave piracy.

Yep my parents bought it for me as a present, wasn't one of the £50 cheapo ones, is a £100 Pioneer one. I just phoned Currys and they told me they wont change it just because I have opened the box/sealed bags - *******
Oh well will have to do without the cartoon channels then
Still good quality picture on the free channels though and all the radio stations work too Surprised as the Freeview site said my postcode needs a special aerial (wideband) as the transmitter in my area is different to the analogue transmitter and wont pick up digital transmissions

Thats absolutely crazy, out of all the models on this comprehensive list http://www.radioandtelly.co.uk/freeviewreceivers.html only 2 of the sets have a card viewer - the Nokia and the Thomson. Surprised if TopUpTV have any customers!

At night i get a crap signal when trying to watch TMF and the hits, Baywatch Hawaii is ok mind
Has anyone changed there aerial, if so to what? And would a wideband aerial be ok in the loft as my new house has no chimney and im lazy and it would be easier.
Cheers

Mine's working great. 50 quid Samsung box. No top up but I don't want that anyway. It's worth the money for the digital radio channels alone. I can now get perfect quality recordings of my favourite Kiss FM DJ mixes.
