Question Anyone gone for the Dell Axium X5/GPS package?

As advertised on the Dell site. Can't work out if it includes all the necessary bits (cradle, cable etc.) as there is such a long list of accessories available. Anyone bought one, is it any good?

Wheelman - I've been looking at this. It is featured on several specialist GPS sat nav sites. The kits I've seen include the Axium X5, wired GPS receiver and Tom Tom 3 UK software. Depending on where you go, some will include a dashboard mount, others include a 128Mb SD card (as opposed to a 64Mb one). Also check because some are doing the 400 Mkhz version of the X5 (which would be slightly more expensive).

Other things to consider - you would need a 256Mb SD card if you wanted to have all the maps of Europe stored at the same time. I've seen some including a free speed camera map upgrade - which is very useful. Others are doing a 3 month trial of the live update traffic jam software, that will automatically recalculate the route in the event of a jam.

Price wise, they seem to start at about £330 upwards.

I'd personally go for the new Dell X30 with built-in bluetooth, and get a bluetooth GPS receiver to go with it. TomTom sell their software packages with a bluetooth GPS receiver IIRC.

They do do a bluetooth GPS unit, but I think it is part of a package with a PDA as well...and to be honest I have not been impressed with the GPS unit. It may be an isolated case but it often does not work and there is no re-set button, so you have to leave it 6 or 7 hours to run out of charge, charge it up fully and try again. Mostly this doesn't work. I have sent it back for repair once and am about to send it back again and it is only 6 months old.

I have a bluetooth serial dongle on order which with a bit of luck I can put on the back of my Road Angle and use that instead, added bonus of 1 less box floating about the car. I have mentioned this in another thread and will post up the results when I get them. You can get cables to go from the Road Angel to SOME PDA's, sadly mine wasn't one of them, hence the bluetooth route.

It never is!

Personally if i was buying the PDA with the main intention of using it as a sat nav unit, I wouldn't worry about the X30. I too have read very indifferent reports about bluetooth GPS devices. X5 bundle with wired GPS would be my prefered option.

I've got the x5 and tom tom + cf gps. Excellent bit of kit, even worked in spain when I went there recently, after loading up the right map.
As a pda, it is all you could ask for, pictures, films of scooby trips, syncs with outlook, massive address book storage!
I know someone who can get you a good deal if you've still not got on yet, pm me for details.
