About 150 yards down the road from my house I've got these chaps living as neighbours:













Took the pics yesterday evening. Apparently the forest opposite my house is full of 'em.

 

Our garden backs onto the woods too.....we had one of them in the garden last year......bit scary, don`t like snakes.

 

Great pics! How did you manage to sneak up on them?

Those adders have very dark colouration, were they really that dark or was it the light?

 

We have new age Travellers living in the reeds just up the road. I understand they aren't venomous in the traditional sense of the word, but I'd swap them for a nest of vipers...less mess and noise

Easy really, they were just sleeping on the hay bales in the sun, so I just walked up took the pics. I'd seen them there at lunchtime, but didn't get any decent pics with my T610 camera, so went back in the evening. The pictures were taken with my Sony DV cam on stills mode (I took some video too) and have been reduced down in size a bit.

One was very dark, the other was a bit lighter. There was a 3rd which was very pale beige with the diamond-back patter very pronounced, but it slid under a log as soon as we arrived.

 

Crikey, MarkO, don't ever let on to Mrs Moose that those critturs are near; she'd never visit your gaff again (seriously), and sore certain never ride in the woods nearby!

Impressive, mind you.

 

Thank **** for St Patrick, I'd plank it with that in the back garden!!!

 

Where abouts do you live? Its great to see some of the UK's rarer and more elusive species doing so well!

 

I'm in Traquair in Scotland. They are most definitely . Apparently some kids have been seen throwing stones at the little blighters though.

Don't worry Mr Moose, I won't be mentioning them to the missus. Having said that, my missus went down to have a look at them last night - apparently she wanted to be sure what they looked like so she knew how to recognise them and run away.

 

I have just moved in to the country, you have me scared to go home now

Just be thankful you dont live in Australia, where you could have the Inland Taipan (or "Fierce Snake" {even though it isn't}) as a neighbour. One bite contains enough venom to see off 250,000 mice, or 250 men...

Try having them in your kitchen because the window was open.

I was doing my best D'Artagnan impression not knowing if it would eat me or not.

All I know is as I got nearer it hissed and fárted.

I've watched every Steve Irwin programme and found an Australian accent does help to catch these critters.

A Linford Christie style dash across the garden holding them also helps.

Best of all though, when you've put it back in the field has to be the Dirk Bogard cool look when you turn around and everybody looks at you as a hero.

That is until they read up on them and find they are almost cute!!

Oh well.
