I want to preserve my pet
Arrived at work today to find my much prized Mexican Red Knee tarantula dying in his tank
I have had this particular spider for nearly 10 years and obviously I was rather attached to it after than length of time.
I'd like to find some way to "keep him" as it were.
Anyone know anything about preserving passed on pets?
Any suggestions what I could do ?

Ghostdog, thanks for that.. but I don't like tatoos and would never have one where it was visible anyway.
Freeze drying? Would I be able to keep it on my desk at work after that?
I though about some sort of resin treatment to maybe make it into a paperweight or pen holder, like the ones you can buy in Malaysia etc. but it would be my own personal pet one.

Taxidermy mate. Costs a fortune for a decent taxidermist but if it means a lot to you then the cost will be worth it. When I was a kid I found a woodpecker on the patio in my parents garden. It was stunning in terms of colours and had flown into the window and broken its neck. Parents were gonna chuck it in the bin and I said semi seriously semi jokingly cant we get it stuffed. So we did and it now sits in a case in my parents lounge in a very plush display. Cost loads but looks great Remember going to the taxidermy place and he had all sorts in his freezer - was like noahs ark meets Iceland
Oh and when are the moderators gonna do something about trolls like Ghostdog posting unwanted comments like his? What a cvnt.

Some people do have tatoos of their pets though, don't they?
I personally wouldn't have a tatoo, but thats me. Maybe I could get a sketch done and have some sort of framed picture I suppose. Might be a good idea.

Hmmm.. I wonder if they'd do a spider.. I'll look into that one B2Z.

Actualy, yes
My wife called him "Dora" from the mexican word Camadora I think it was, which means something like Red Knee.
That was before we realised it was a he - we originally thought it was a she, you can't tell easily when they are hatchlings.

Talk about bloody double standards.
Post about losing a cat and any posts that were not supportive were vaped by the mods.
Talk about a pet tarantula and just because its not a fluffy and popular pet flames and trolls are allowed to get away with insulting Buzz.
However the guy whose cat was run over might appreciate some of Ghostdogs fine art.

what do they do?
Erm... sit around a lot.... spin webs... oh yeah..
AND EAT THINGS ALIVE!
I've got a bird eating tarantula thats about 10" legspan.. it's beigger than my hand
That's still alive though
Pickling.... Nah, they lose their colour and fall apart after a few years.
Did I give him a friend? They'd have eaten each other. Spiders don't HAVE friends, they just have mates Andn then the female usually eats the male - if only I was so lucky and my wife would eat me

Well you done good laying itout. spiders and tarantulas get very fragile if not frozen right away. i mount quite a few and here is the method i use. Turn the tarantula over, and starting at the small hole in the rear ofthe abdomen, slice him up the bottom from then silk hole, to just before the mandible(fangs). Using forcepts or a popsicle stick, scarape out all the goo from inside the abdomen. Go slow as it tears easily.Thentake your forcepts and pull out al the meat in the upper body at the leg roots. It will sort of resemble lobster meat. Clean this out as best you can till you reach the root of each leg. Take a syringe, and inject each leg with Rittels Preserve-it. Then dust the interior with borax. Using sculpall, refill the upper body where all the meat was taken out and glue shut. Take a ball of sculpall, and knead in into shape to refill the abdomen and then also glue or sew shut. Position him in desired pose, and hot glue the legs down in desired pose. Let dry about a week or so. He should not lose much color so at this point, spray him with an an aerosol hair spray like women use on their hair, and it willmake all the little hairs on the body and legs stand on end and the results are great.

Ahhh but Jim, Cats have a very special place on S'Net. You can tell remarkable tales of Mole culling to great applause from the gallery but threaten to even speak harshly to some random birdkilling, vole torturer that defecates over the garden you let your children play in and the thought police are here in moments
And buzz - personally I'd start I collage with it. You could add little bits of pasta, sea shells and other stuff you find in the bin to make it look like your favourite "spider at the seaside" memory.

Deano.. thats a fantastic idea! Except... it's never been to the seaside.. it'd have to be a sort of office theme, 'cos thats where it lived... paperclips and pencil shavings I suppose
I don't think I fancy the DIY taxidermy though...
I think I'll just buy a Goliath bird eater to replace it instead, if I can see through the misty eyes to find my way to the pet shop
Redkop - no need to moderate on my behalf - I've printed GD's artwork off and put it on the the office wall - my colleagues all wanted to do exactly that while it was alive, but thanks for the thought
