Question Cheaper train tickets?

We've got to go to a wedding in Torquay on the August Bank holiday weekend, and I really don't fancy driving it, so thought we'd go on the train (my wife can't fly due to medical reasons). Just had a look on thetrainline.com and it looks like it's going to cost us £235 to go down on Friday and return on Sunday - and that's before accomodation etc!

Any ideas of where/how to get cheaper tickets?

I've looked before and not found any

Best I've ever seen is special offers on the specific rail company websites - eg, once got 4 x 1st class seats from Edinburgh to London on GNER for £80 return, ie £20 each.

I assume Torquay is Virgin?

Mark, I don't know where you're travelling from, but I put in Carlisle to Torquay as a test & came up with £229.40 return for 2 adults for the w/e after next.

There was a suggestion on the web site to use single fares & for a good advance booking you should be able to save money. If yu can tweak your timings, you may be able to get a 1 way (single) ticket for £20 each. These tickets are in short supply so you need to book a long way in advance.

I checked fares on this site: http://www.gner.co.uk/

If its virgin and you can book in advance they have very good rates. 14 day advance ticket is the best.
