Speed camera that catches you upto a mile away!

Yeah right so the argument of having speed cameras at accident black spots stands up then doesn't it? Or are they saying there needs to a zone a mile either side of a particular spot - I think not. Robbing money grabbing barstewards is what they are and nothing less

Its new American 'preemptive strike' technology, still to be fully tested, as so far only US police cars have been registered speeding......

ooh, ohh, mith, mith (puts hand up) - I just remembered I wanted to share some GOOD news about cameras. But can't find it In Monday's Times there was an article on cameras being used now to stop tailgating. Anyone got a Times Subscription, as they charge for archive search?

It still bothers me that they can call them "safety cameras".... They take pictures of SPEEDING motorists not safe motorists. And before we get the but speeding is unsafe thats not always the case, and if you were drivng down the motorway at 70mph did a handbrake turn past one of the safety cameras would it take a picture?? No. Personally I think that's a little less safe than driving at 80mph.

Yes calling them safety camera's is a spin doctor idea may be if we call Belmarsh a holiday camp then all the people inside will think it is that? and all the car thieves will be queueing outside to get in.

We went through 5 or 6 Gatso's the other night, road that threads from Luton-Barton and to the back end of Bedford......at a fair whack over the speed limit....made sure we pulled a different "pose" for each camera...I shall treat this one the same.....One of the many advantages of motorcycling!

I never do that just because there will come a time that they decide to put a mobile unit there if you keep doing it at the same camera regularly. I also look at it that the more I take the p!ss on the bike with fixed forward facing cameras the greater the chance of sods law applying and me getting caught for something further down the road.

lol....wasting your breath. you wont do away with speed cameras because they are simply a method of capture. the law says you cant go over a certain speed. if you dont like it you should try and change the law, pointless moaning about the way they catch you.

Who exactly here is wasting their breath Tiggs? You are by the sounds of it as no one here so far has mentioned trying to do away with them. I fully agree with the ones where I live as they are near to schools and busy roads near old peoples homes etc. Cameras in built up areas are a good thing.
What I think is out of order are the revenue raising mobile cameras taken out at weekends onto favourite stretches of road that are known to be fast and busy yet not known as accident black spots. They can not be defended other than being there to raise revenue from the motorist.

Speedking yes you are right, its not a camera but in terms of talking about mobile speed traps I put all mobile devices under one terminology of mobile camera which perhaps I should change to mobile speed trap. Anyway if this device does what it says (or what Sky says) then it must have a camera element anyway as
The £8,000 hand-held devices take pictures so clear that they can even capture who is behind the wheel at the time.

I'm interested to know if they have a camera that takes your pic from a mile away?
Seems that you have to have a radar detector and emergency braking to do a U turn sharpish. A bit difficult on a motorway of course....But a mile away would allow for you to change course as long as you detect the radar.
Of course these are safety camerasNot!

For those who suspect that cameras at schools might be a good idea it is worth considering some recent research which demonstrated that when a camera is placed at a junction out of the 8 seconds it takes for a motorist to approach and cross the junction the average driver spends 5 of those seconds looking inside the car at the speedo. Do you really think it is going to increase safety to encourage the average driver to drive past about 50 percent of schools with his or her eyes closed?
The fact that cameras don't increase safety is ably demonstrated in Essex, which has the highest density of cameras in the UK and which saw fatalities rise from 92 in 2002 to 116 in 2003.
The tailgating cameras are also a joke as even superficial consideration leads to the question: what happens if someone cuts in on me just before the camera? What happens, of course, is that the dangerous driver goes free and you get money extracted from your wallet to make the roads more dangerous for you to drive on.
Make sure you raise these issues with local politicians when they come looking your vote and make your position very clear. They need to get off the backs of the innocent, safe and generally law abiding motorist and start cracking down on real crime and real dangerous driving.
