Nice areas in North (or north of) London
Requirements are
North or North West London as far as M25 if fast routes in
30 minute train to Kings X - or tube to Gt Portland St if NW london.
'Nice' area (preferably surburban) where a decent car can be parked on street safely
Any suggestions?

North London:
Highgate, Hampstead, E Finchley, Finchley, Golders Green, Muswell Hill, Crouch End, Barnet.
Loads of 'em, but they're all next to bad areas.

Muswell Hill is jolly nice - should be able to pick up a nice semi for something short of £1M. in fact all those areas are bl**dy expensive now. i grew up near highgate, but i couldn't afford to buy there even 8 years ago - so now my home is sunny walthamstow (the next up-and-coming area of london!)

Bizarre as it may seem, you can get a train from St Neots to Kings Cross that takes 30 mins. I'm in Bishop's Stortford, which is a lot nearer London than St Neots is, and the train to Liverpool Street takes a lot longer.
House prices in St Neots are probably a lot cheaper than outer London, and it's nice there too

I drive into stortford to train into Liv St and the one last tues took less than 40 mins (Stansted Express)
But stortford has lots of planes about...
I agree however about north herts, west cambs - the Cambridge/Royston to Kings X is very quick. Ashwell is worth a look.

I get the Stansted "Express" every day
The train from Kings X to Peterborough is a proper express. Out of the station at Kings X, then flat out all the way to the first stop (St Neots).

Plenty of nice places. Oakwood and Cockfosters are evry nice but quite pricey. I'm in the Ridgeway area of Enfield ( EN2) which looks over the greenbelt and I can just see ( but never hear) the M25. I'm very happy here and glad I bought when I did as the prices have doubled in 4 years.
Winhcmore Hill is very nice as is Muswell Hill and Crouch End.
Some parts of Palmers Green are nice but it might be easier to advise you were is not quite as nice.
Avoid Borehamwood but Shenley which is further out is nice but a little remote. Plenty of nice places beyond going up the A1 corridor

Any of the london places near a nightbus or does Kings X have trains through the night (currently in croydon and there's a train from victoria on the hour every hour as well as buses).
Basically I wanna be able to go out on a friday or saturday night in london and get back in the middle of the night if possible

Loads of night buses running from Trafalgar Sq. to most parts of outer (N London) throughout the night. Not sure about the trains.
I often use the N91 from Trafalgar Sq. and hop off at Turnpike lane tube. Only takes about 20 mins.

I live in Watford and take the train into euston every morning.. The train usually takes about 25 minutes and the train ticket is 180-something pounds a month, a travelcard i believe is in the 250's.
Watford is alright to live in, if a little dull... Avoid South Oxhey and possibly parts of Garston. Nascot Woods seems alright so far for us.
One problem with Watford is that it's very very pricey.
Maybe have a look at Tring if you like the rural feel, really nice town and also on the Silverlink route, but even more expensive than Watford

Moose ~ a reply to you personally......
I have lived both in Croxley Green and Rickmansworth in my 25 years in this area and Croxley has a heart ! Ricky is just a "town" with a small "t". I owned and ran the last remaining hardware store in Croxley for 6 1/2 years and 'cept for a few odd ones , the customers were the salt of the earth. Having brought up my family and since doing so divorced and re-married, I'm now off to pastures new, but I'll treasure fond memories of my time here. Its very much a case of what you put in, you get back threefold.

I live in Watford but most my mates are Finchley, Mill Hill way. Catch the N20 from Tott Crt Rd every weekend home goes through Camden, Finchley, Barnet etc so no probs there... Forget about trains though in the early hours.
