Just had my Volvo V70 serviced and was charged £58 for 5.8 litres of Synthetic engine oil, which seemed an awful lot. They say it is usual and that the car runs better with Synthetic rather than semi. Firstly is Synthetic necessary (its a 2.4 Turbo model) ? and how much should this oil cost ? am I being ripped ?
Help appreciated.

Kerchiing.........
roll up roll up,, theres one born every minute......
you have almost paid £20 per litre for oil..... thats twice the price for castrol syntrax diff stuff which is approx £9.99 per litre...
if i was you i would be hot footing it back to the dealer and screaming refund....
even buying 5 litres of the stuff from halfords ie mobil 1 0/5w aint that much..
some one is taking the pi** at your expense

Yes Synthetic is neccesary for Turbo engines generally due to the intense heat of the Turbo, the oil gets hammered as it passes through to lubricate the bearings, 58 quid is ott but probably a standard Volvo price, Halford were doing 5 litres of full synthetic on a 2 for one (10 litres for 30 quid), I had a T5 and Halfords put mineral oil in it despite me telling them synthetic only, made them change it again as it will seem ok for a while but eventually being cheap will cost you money.

I don't believe that synthetic oil is really necessary, certainly not for a road car. I think that semi synthetic is more than adequate and considerably cheaper too. My local Subaru dealer recommends semi synthetic as well.
My racing engines (turbocharged) used to manage quite happily on Duckhams straight 20-50 and they were revving to 11500 rpm. Cant see why a roadgoing Scooby won't be safe on semi synthetic. That price you were charged for oil is horrific.
