All of you who wear glasses all the time...
Do you pay alot for them?
I get a new pair of glasses about every 18 months. seeing as i have to wear them all the time, i like to get nice ones.
today, i went for an eye test and sure enough my prescription has changed, so time for new ones.
My everyday specs
Frames £285
Lenses £140
Fitting £35
Sunglasses
Frames and lenses £275
Fitting £35
Total £770
I bet i'm not the only one who pays that much.

What kind of optitions was this - local corner shop or Spec-Savers type? Armarni frames?
35 for fitting, what is that all about?

Yes, I do pay a lot - although certainly not that much. They're about £350 a time IIRC.
The difference is that I don't get separate sunglasses, though - I prefer photochromic lenses. Although they don't go as dark as proper sunglasses they're still pretty good and, of course, I never find myself caught wearing the wrong ones.
Thankfully my prescription is now pretty stable. I've had my current pair about 2 years and although my eyes have changed slightly, it's not a correction that's worth the expense of correcting. (My eyesight is still well above driving standard). I expect to buy a new pair in maybe a year's time - my other eye will probably have changed too by then.

the opticians is round the corner from my work. they're alain mikli frames. i assumed the 35 squid was to put the lenses in sort of charge. the past 2 or 3 different opticians have charged similar amounts for frames, lenses and fitting.
I've never been to specsavers/boots/etc. I don't generally like their ranges.

BTW it does still sound as though you're paying over the odds. My specs are the only 'designer' items I ever wear, and I get them from Boots. WTF is £35 for fitting all about?

that'll be why boots, etc are cheaper then. they don't charge the dopey additional 'fitting' charges. I guess that's the downside with private opticians, rather than the chains.

fitting charge - I think they're taking the mick a bit!
my last lot were £150 for Armani frames, £200 for the lenses (am VERY shortsighted!!) and about £40 for the extra clip bit for sunglasses - I don't buy prescription sunglasses.
I also have contact lenses for when I do wear sunglasses ( I have a considerable collection of them )
PS this is also a private opticians too

I got mine from Specsavers Hugo Boss £85 notes cause im on the contact lens scheme as well. Bargain. Brought some DKNY circa £300 from Boots fell apart within months and Boots were sh*te. Got me money back in the end. Specsavers have always been top bannana for me.

Vision Express are muppets.
I got a pair recently and between trying them on and them putting the lenses in, they managed to bend the legs in a very strange manner. They got sent back upstairs and came back with a kink in them! They didn't have another pair so 3 week wait for new.
And if you want to confuse them, go into one where you didn't get tested and ask them to get hold of your prescription.... 2 weeks and half a dozen faxes later they might have it....
As above specsavers have always served me well but their range can be a bit "old".

Usually max about £200 every couple of years when Specsavers do their 2 for 1 deal (I get the second pair done as sunglasses). I don't see the point in so-called designer frames when the same features are available without the price on Specsavers own brand, I've had titanium, carbon fibre etc frames for well under £200 and I never bother with any fancy lenses or coatings 'cos they're a waste of money, IMHO.

If you had eyesight as bad as me, you would have fancy lenses
my old glasses weigh a ton in comparison to the newer ones and the difference in the thickness of the lenses is huge!

Jesus Fosters are they solid gold frames!
I've just paid about £350 for my new everyday glasses (latest D&G design) with coated anti glare and the more expensive thin lenses and replacement lenses for my sunglasses, as my prescription like yours, has changed. I thought that was a lot! All this was a Specsavers - very good service and very thorough eye test.
I think the best bet is to get an eye test done, take the prescription settings and source everything online and have them delivered.

How much - **** that. Bought my latest pair in Cyprus, saved a fortune and got the Tax back. Very interesting approach across there, opticians on every street corner, no appointments necessary, no charge for appointments, all the latest equipment, no chip on their shoulders, glasses ready next day. Mine are Signature frameless (?) frames and plastic high index, scratch coated lenses. Total costs with 6 months supply of contact lenses was under 200 quid.
p.s. most of them do mail order as well..

glass are a bit of a con really......aside from daft NHS style ones you could muddle up the designer frames with non designer ones and not tell.
i go for weight and strength......wearing glasses makes you look like a speccy **** so as long as they are discrete who cares who makes the frames!
its like buying designer socks.

Think the last pair I bought was about £200 for frames and lenses. Eyes have been pretty stable for the last 3 years so still have the same frame/lenses. Never ever paid anything for fitting, and I've even had a couple of minor frame repairs/straightening done by my optician for free.

£770 - **** me!
I've got some lightweight and very comfy Jaeger Titanium ones - with the ultra thin lens etc they were around £200 from Boots (excellent service from two of my local branches).

Another vote for specsavers here.
Handy for sunglasses when they have the two for one offer.
I've always had really nice frames from there.
I get my contacts with them also.
My mum goes to a small opticians in town. The price she pays would keep me in specs for years!!! She gets ripped off every time but will she listen ......??? doh!
WRX Wannabe .... I'll rememeber you next time
Its a bummer to have to pay so much to see.
Something that so many people take for granted.
I'm buggered without my specs.

As above, Specsavers at 2 for 1 time Usually spend in the region of £200 caz the sunglasses come out dearest.
The only extra I bother with are the lightweight lenses, because like scoob babe, I need jam jar bottoms

Mine were about £150 I think, 70 for the lenses with scratch resistance (I do alot of stuff which means my glasses freqently go flying ) and frames were 80.
Had some designer frames and they fell appart very quickly, so just get one's I like which are cheaper now
Specsavers are doing £60 off a second pair if you buy them within 3 months, so looking to get some sunglasses done next month. Will cost me £90 for the lenses and whatever I choose to spend on frames
I tend to get my eye test through work at a really good local opticans then take my prescription with me to Specsavers, never had any problems - glasses within an hour
