Is there an easy and cheap way to do this, or should I just get a stereo with a cd player?

What do you have at the moment? Any CD Player plus a recordable MD will do the job...

Cheap soundcard with optical line out. Use optical in on the MD recorder and CD player in PC and Bobs your Aunties husband

You just need a NetMD walkman, then all you need to do is drag and drop your MP3 files using the supplied software and they get converted to audio on the fly, sorted! much quicker than the old days of using optical line in and copying.
