I'd argue that house music isn't boom boom boom but usually more vocal and uplifting.

yeah but you cant argue that every tune has exactly the same bassline. the rest of the stuff may be different but the base line is the same on every tune

i believe u are thinking more of HARD house. house music is cracker i have busted a few groovey moves to some house tunes. but i've thrown full wobblers to Hard House if ya like it check out a song Champion Burns - Scratchism, its a beast

ur idea of what Trance is, is easy to understand as this is what u r told his Trance (a buzz word lately) but it is really very watered down trance/dance i personally dont recongise it at trance

you could say that about lots of different music but it has to fit into a category somewhere, and its not pop music (in the sense of boy bands) and the closest thing it comes into is trance therefore making it trance

you could argue that some artists dont produce rock music just cos its not as hard rock as others...but its still rock music

Dj sammy trance? LOL Thats pop music/euro dance. But it certainly isnt trance.

using random examples (that you may have heard of or did well) from my record boxes- as i play all styles there are plenty to choose from

p.s- all your genres listed can be subdivided many times and they cross over a lot also (subdivided genres also breifly mentioned)

Very briefly:

-Dance- general term to describe anything with a dancey beat (with bom tsch bom tsch bom tsch bom tsch being the generic dance beat)

-Trance (hard/euphoric/euro/dark/)- example-armin van buuren, system F, basically Generally euphoric and uplifting (although can be darker)- the main characteristic of trance is the long, quiet breakdown which then builds up to the peak of the track. fast music

Garage (2 step/speed garage/4 to the floor)-example:shola ama- imagine(asylum remix),K ci and jojo- tell me its real (remix), artful doger-re rewind
an evolution of house music fused with r&b/soul/hip hop/ragga. skippy drums and BIG bassline being the characteristics. tends to be quite fast, although not as fast as trance. roughly double the speed of r&B/hip hop (and not by coincidence)

House (baleric/funky/progressive/U.S/soulful/)example: Narcotic thrust- i like it,Shapeshifters-lolas theme.
Typical dancey beat (see 'dance' above for description) varies widely in speed, soulfulness, content and appeal. Can catergorise anything from basement jaxx to masters at work.

Underground- General term for anything not very commercially viable, or small fan base, no potential for radio/video play/record sales. For example, seb fontaine (aka dead mundane) plays mainly underground stuff on his show on radio 1. can also be used as a term for something that may become big, but isnt yet. But its most common use is with regards to commercial viablilty/those 'in the know'

You can argue until the cows come home over genre defining, and peple always will- the fact is so many genres cross over nowadays, and evolve from one another it can be difficult to pigeonhole them.

I could write pages on this stuff-

let me be your fantasy is actualy a really really old oldskool track, non of this in the charts buisness, i have mix tapes fromn 95 (i think) when this was getting hammerd in the clubs!!

still is dance music i suppose

Dj sammi, if anything other then complete ****e, could be classed as commercial cheesy and crappy trance

as the man above said i would class PVD and Tiesto as typical trance, Trance also has a few off springs such as Hard Trance (which i Dj and is a lot harder and less "floaty" ) and more recently the Goa/Psy-Trance which i rekon will be a big, well known genre by the end of this year, been listening to quite a bit of Psy-Trance recently, doesnt seam to be much uk involvement

everything seams to split up and start its new genre, house, hard house, funky house, still waiting for Psy-House

to get to sum decent "trance" you have to dig underneath the many layers of the commercial crap, and get into a decent club which plays for the people, and not just for the drinks sold from the bar

In the good old days House was house and Garage was vocal house

None of this 2 step UK MTV bollocks.

Theres some good stuff out there if you look for it, proper garage has never been mainstream

Dj Sammy = Trance - oh dear

Cheesy pop/dance.

Proper trance comes from the like of the Tunnel lot, DJ Networx etc etc

Not to say I dont like any cheesy pop type stuff, some I dont mind, but for proper stuff, you need the tunes that aren't in the charts.

Go listen to the channels on di.fm for some clarification.

In the proper good old days, house was Italian, and Garage was where I kept my BMX with 5 spoke mags

There's a lot of stuff that doesn't fit into any category at all, or is categorised as something that's pretty meaningless. For example:

IDM is Intelligent Dance Music, but you can't really dance to it.

Garage (the real US stuff) is so called because of the Paradise Garage club. "UK Garage" or "Speed Garage" has nothing to do with Garage at all really.

Trance was originally so-called because of it's hypnotic properties, the latest Euro Screamers from AvB, Ferry Corsten et al are hardly likely to put you to sleep. What they used to call "Eurodance" - European music at 135-145bpm with big synths and female vocals, Cappella etc is now what most people call Trance, it's just the sounds have progressed and the melodies become more complex, but it's essentially the same thing.

I was just going to post the same..... House comes from the abrieviation of "The Warehouse" where house music pioneers like Derrick Carter used to play the style of music.

UK Garage is pure Turd and it's an insult to compare it with 'Garage'

Dont forget the Hardcore.
Sharkey, Sy, Kevin Energy, Dougal, Hixxy, Brisk Et. al.
The Hardcore scene has remerged from the 99 dark days of chipmunk vocals and not production talent.
I'm loving my hardcore and have been since 97though

What a pointless thread!!!

The people who make the music don't pigeonhole themselves (and lets face it, these days there are new "types" of dance/house music evolving on a daily basis!!), so why does everybody else try!! Basically the only two types of dance music and 4 beat and breakbeat.

And by the way - Let me be your fantasy was first released in 1992!
