Default hmm.. insurance dilemma?

im currently on my dads insurance and was planning on being on there until i have finished university. c2006/7

im currently on decent money working all the hours under the sun grafting at two different jobs, so i would be able to afford most cars i fancy to be honest. however, being 19 insurance is a c*nt. i am currently after a 172cup (or similar) but would never be able to afford this on my own policy (or rather, i would not be WILLING to pay 4k a year to insure the damm thing!) however, cars are the only thing im into and i would much rather have an awesome car and no social life than every night on the pi*s with my mates. if i insure this in my dads name i can get it for around 1300ish fc which is something im definately considering.

now i know what you are all thinking, 'get your own policy get some no-claims etc and you can drive it all on your own,' but frankly im not willing to pay a similar amount (£1300ish) to drive a 1.0 nissan micra under MY OWN name. (check it out, its true).

so what it boils down to is this..... is it worth it driving a cool car in someone elses (my dads) name to save maybe 3k ish a year? also, if worst comes to worst and i do stack it, will the insurance company get arsey about it? i dont see why they should (but i reckon they will) because lets face it i have payed £1300ish for the privilege of being able to drive it, so they have to expect me to get my monies worth, so to speak.

now one option would be to have a compromise, something quick but cheaper to insure that i could get my own name policy for but my problem is that i begrudge paying it at all because i dont drive like your average kid undertaking and doing 50 past schools. and i honestly dont class myself as a massive risk behind the wheel. i may have a bump or two (like we all could) but i could never imagine wrapping it around a tree. i can cound on one finger the amount of times i have lost control of my current car in the two years i have had it (a vtr by the way) which was a combination of a 14 hour shift and ice whilst taking a ruondabout at about 7mph. i dont plan on thrashing the life out of it either as i genuinely love cars and dont just think of them as something to brag to my mates about. i do understand why young drivers insurance is so high because loads of my mates have written off cars but i genuinely feel strongly about this as i am confused and i dont want the prospect of having a bump and then the insurance refusing to pay which is what it all boils down to really.

my thinking is that when i am 23 and finished uni i will have much more disposable income and be able to fork out 1k ish on something to start from scratch on my own policy. at least that is the plan anyway!

im also thinking that if i stay on till 23 then i will have save loads in the long run when all is said and done. ie they shaft younger drivers much more proportionately than they do older drivers without ncd's. so theres the financial arguement behind it.

in case you were thinking 'what does your dad think about this?' he's not bothered because he trusts me and isnt arsed about the no-claims because hes into classics and insures them all for about £100 a year without ncd anyway.

sorry for the essay but its something that is genuinely confusing me and i feel i need a bit of guidance. please dont just give it all 'young kids shouldnt have fast cars spiel' because i dont want to hear it and its not appropriate.

any thoughful responses will be very gratefully received.

confused!

Buy the ****test low insurance group banger you can find. Insure it third party only at your parents address, but park it somewhere else out of site and don't touch it for the entire time you are at Uni. Drive under your dad's insurance in the meantime, then when you leave Uni, buy your own car and transfer your bonus onto it. Hey presto, cheapish insurance whilst at Uni and a guaranteed ncb for your graduation.

And if you have a claim on yer opld mans insurance, he'll luv ya forever!!! He'll be paying every year for something that has nothing to do with him, why let someone else suffer, do it on your own, at least that way you're self sufficient!!

get a 1980 mini for a fiver - spend a grand doing it up - get a 1375 engine - get classic insurance and you will have the best of all worlds - everyone knows a 1375 mini is both the coolest and fastest thing on the planet. (30 mph feels like 130 )

Would the insurance company "get arsey"? I certainly hope they would.

If you're going to be the main driver then the premium for that risk is £3k not £1300. So you've done the insurance company out of £1700. And who's going to pay that? Everyone who doesn't try and commit fraud.

Virtually all car insurance policies nowadays ask who is the main driver as well as who is the registered keeper/owner. If you've been honest and put that you are the main driver, you have little to worry about in terms of whether they refuse to pay out in the event you have an accident.

If you don't reveal who is the real main driver, you are taking the risk of the insurance company not paying out in the event you are subject to a significant claim. You only need to bump the rear of a new BMW for the claim to be thousands. Insurance assessors are becoming much more clever about uncovering insurance fraud.

If you really stuff the car and are subject to a really big claim, they will put an investigator on the case. They have lots of ways of avoiding paying out, and it won't take them long to work out who was the main driver. They will ask neighbours, security at your work etc in an effort to find out.

I had the same issues when I was your age. I chose to drive an old banger - a 1972 Ford Escort 1300XL.

Reffro's idea would work. Also, if you kept it road legal, you could even claim that it was your main method of transport in the event of an expensive prang in a car on your Dad's insurance.

Try to think of this as 'total cost' of ownership rather than just the insurance cost.

Buy an old car (can be fun like a MK2 golf gti or 205 gti etc.) and insure it TPTF in your own name and build up no claims. This will be cheaper overall than buying a clio 172 and insuring it in your dads name (dodgy and come claim time you'll be screwed as will future applications for insurance!). With the older cars, you can have fun tinkering and also save cash by servicing yourself. on a newer car, servicing yourself may affect resale value. Think about the cost of depreciation too. This will cost you as much as the insurance, if not more.

Anyway, why on earth do you need a car at uni? Spend the money on beer, gigs, women , study materials, having a good laugh etc.. If you want to do the odd journey out then hire a car for the weekend or take the train etc. Also, all your pals will be 'expecting' you to drive so while they go out getting drunk, you'll be sipping orange juice all night. When you finish uni is the time to be thinking about buying and running a car.

[old git mode]

Never had a car when I was at Uni. Those that did (few & far between) had clapped out old bangers that were lucky to get going before the students got up (ie, 5pm).
Now I drive past Uni's and see students in all sorts of new cars. WTF?! I thought they all got LESS money these days - oh no, I forgot, they get LOANS which they use to live on (sorry, buy cars with)
[/old git mode]

PS Apologies to original poster - I know you have said your working your a$$ off away from your studies to fund it - my point is more aimed at the general student population

I drove on my dad's policy with my own cars till i was 19. Trouble was he decided wanted a car so needed the NCB. I had 2 accidents during this time (both write-offs) and one was found to be my fault (it shouldnt have fecking been but thats another story). Anyway no fuss was made about the insurance and the car was even registered in my name!

My insurance was 2400 on a zetec-s !!! Its come down a bit now (and i have a scoob), you should never buy a **** car because ppl say "thats best". You're into cars as am i, and i know having something **** just isnt an option.

Either afford to insure it yourself (installments?) or find a company which will put you as main driver but the policy in your old mans name. That should stop the moaners.

i think the idea of insuring a banger third party in my own name might work as well as driving the other car on my dads policy.

also: the last point about insuring me as the main driver but the policy being in my dads name: does ANYONE do that because its not something i have heard about to be honest... and i have spent a fair amount of time looking.

any more ideas considered but thanks for the replies so far.

I'm a big fan of cars and at your age (just 6 years ago) I really wanted something cool as well. But realistically you have to try to see the bigger picture. I left uni, got a loan and bought a VTS with 1 years free insurance. The bonus at the end of that meant I could insure pretty much anything within reason so I bought a scooby. At no point did I invest in my home or any other aspect of life. Its been fun but now I'm selling the scooby and sorting out other things in my life that have been neglected.

If I were you I'd get a really cheap cr@p car in your own policy for 2 years (it'll pass faster than you think - trust me). This way you will be 21 years old (insurance plummets) with 2 years NCD in your own name. You will also have saved up 2 years more money working your *** off. Then you'll be in a position to get something really really nice/fast and not have silly insurance to pay. 21 is the golden year, hold out till then if you can Hitting 25 makes no difference btw - my insurance went up when I turned 25

You resent having to pay x thousands for insurance - well so do i and i'm 30.

In my case it's *only* about 2k p.a. for my car and the wife's car, but neither of them are exactly setting the world on fire: Mondeo TDCi and 2.0 Pug 406.

it's just one of those tings that you have to factor into the cots of living. in my case premiums are high cos i live in east london; in your case cos of your age. i don't agree that using your dad's name is the way forward, for the reasons already given.
