Road Angel Problems
Anyone else unit having trouble finding satellites? Around Surrey/Berks.
I've noticed that in the morning its taking longer and longer for my RA to acquire satellites, and this morning on my whole drive from Guildford to Bracknell (about 35mins) it didn't activate once (and trust it to be on a morning with a camera van parked up so my warning I've set didn't activate - wasn't going too fast though - I hope!)
Unit isn't a year old yet so might get it replaced........

I would report it to Road Angel. I had a similar problem with my unit (only a couple of months old) and they have swapped it out. They will probably ask you to do a signal strength test inside and outside of the car just to check that the unit is (or isn't) faulty.

Cheers Chris, I did email them and they were pretty swift replying, I've sent my serial no to them. Funny thing is, went out to the car and it got the speed reading in less than a minute here in Bracknell. Maybe theres bad signal or something round Guildford - though it doesn't explain why it didn't start working when I got to Bracknell. Guess I was just trying to find out if any other local users had similar probs.........

On the basis that it uses GPS, it is unlikely that a particular area would be affected. Weather doesn't seem to be an issue either. The only thing that blocks the signal is if you lose line of sight (i.e. over hanging trees, tall buildings, tunnels etc).

I find mine sometimes takes a long time, but it is usually when it has been switched off overnight or disconnected for an update. In the manual it does actually say it can take up to 20 minutes to aquire satellites. Normally once it has done it in the morning I find it locks on pretty quick throughout the day.

Right all. I've had an email back from Road Angel. I'd just like to say that Luke in support has been VERY good, quick replies and very helpful, I'm impressed.
This is what he said so I'll post it as it might help you lot out too:
"Dear Neil
The Road Angel stores satellite data when it is powered off. This data
is volatile data which is reliant on an internal battery. If the
battery endurance is reduced over a period of time then the Road Angel
may struggle to pick up satellites at point of power up.
I suggest you charge the Road Angel over night, indoors for 4-6 hours.
This will clear satellite data and increase the battery endurance.
After which place the Road Angel on the roof of the vehicle (powered up)
for 15 minutes. This will rebuild the satellite data and because it has
a clear view of the sky it should pick up 000mph quicker than inside the
vehicle.
This should resolve the problem.
If the Road Angel does not pick up satellites (000mph) on the roof of
the vehicle within 15 minutes then I believe the Road Angel has
developed a fault and therefore requires repairing.
I would highly recommend you carry out these tests soon as the warranty
of your Road Angel is valid until 4/6/2004.
If the Road Angel requires repairing under the warranty period this is
of course Free of charge.
I hope this helps
Regards
Luke Collis"
