posting a cat
no, really. this is NOT a cruelty thread.. i love cats. its a serious question (albeit a weird one).
my aunt has kindly agreed to look after my gf's cat while we move into temporary accomodation (until we find something permanent.. so will probably be for a few months).. but she lives several hours drive away and we won't be able to take the cat there ourselves. clearly i cant slap a few stamps on the cat and post it... but is there any company that deals in transporting pets and if so, what sort of cost?
cheers!

Are there no boarding kennels or catteries closer by? Would a friend be willing to drive the cat, if you pay petrol costs?
A drive of that magnitude is bound to stress the cat, let alone with the waiting times a delivery company would add to it.
It might be worth asking your vet for a mild sedative for the cat when it goes.

Cue the mods: "people won't be able to resist advising cruelty - locked"

I take it the cat isn't that important to both of you then?
Type of pet owner I don't like.
Had one of my dogs needed to go a mere few hours away I'd have made time.
You propose letting a stranger take it?

@ajm
Have you got some problem with cats or is it with moderators in general? if you have a problem with the mods regarding the locking of your cat threads, why don't you email webmaster@scoobynet.co.uk instead of continually sniping about it on various threads.
I am not a cat lover but I do like them ond don't mind them, but there are a lot of devoted cat people on SN and people going on about shooting them or poisoning them with antifreeze is only going to get peoples backs up when there really is no need for it.
So you hate cats! big deal is it really worth getting a reputation over? just keep your opinions and suggestions to yourself then threads will stop getting locked or deleated.

You really ought to try and get a close friend or relative to deliver said *****.
I would be uncomfortable with trusting a stranger with a loved one! (Cat or Child).
If you have problems due to circumstances then try the RSPCA they may be able to do something for you. Our local Vet looked after our cat for us but that was only for a short while, and he did need special care .......
Hope you sort something out.

glad to say you've put it in nice terms rather than others (well, one other) who assumes i haven't even tried and brand me a bad pet owner (especially weird when i dont even own the cat anyway).
thanks to all who have replied anyway (well, all but one who'd rather just waste bandwidth with incessant winging about the "type" of pet owner(!?!) i apparently am - you know who you are)

Milo - you could show the cat a map and tell it where to go, it'd probably have some fun getting there. Cats are very clever, never forgotten they were once worshipped, and don't they let us know it.
On a more serious note, the transportation. Would echo talking to a pet shop about this as, but then it would be them with a van and a cat carrier I guess. Don't think ParcelForce or a courier firm would deal in transport of live cargo, well, not domestic pets. Agree with the sedative though, would chill the cat right out, which would stop claws being put where they should not be if cat gets stressed.

Oh and further I see you are distancing yourself from ownership now, good move
Also notice I can reply without resulting to vitriol.

if you'd wanted to comment that i should try asking a known person to help (which i have already spent time trying), try suggesting in a more friendly, community-oriented (or at LEAST less agressive) way, such as the approach by r32. your reply then would have been appreciated/valued, and not mocked.
fact is, i have tried this (asking relatives/friends).

Nothing you have said has changed my mind.
You are not prepared to travel yourself for your girlfriends cat who I assume you like a bit, enough to move in with each other maybe?
Remember, it's my view, yours is evidently different.

sad that as a human being you can't assume the best of people and that im asking the question as a last resort.

my view of you could so easily be that you're a bad pet owner if i took the same judgemental attitude as you. you say you have dogs, but you didn't say you fed them. thus you must be starving them and are a bad pet owner. shame on you

Right, I'm off for my Marmalade sandwiches.
Good luck anyway, whichever route you take.
