I finish uni in june and am thinking of renting a house in northampton with 2 my my uni m8s. been sitting down this evening and working out bills approx and for a 3 bedroom house we worked it will cost us each approx 500 a month living

rent 250
council tax 30
internet 12
sky 7
shopping 80
fuel 120 a month (full tank a week)

then theres the 1/4 bills electric, water, gas, phone,

The Chronicle and Echo has a big job section every Thursday (today).

Go buy one and see what is out there, but not many will advertise salary.

My work is advertising in the paper this week for an office admin person.

Get applying for those jobs and I hope you get a pleasant surprise.

how about a postie? - one of my friends tried it after leaving uni and he got quite good money for the hours he had to put in.

Bet you are looking at £70 or so per month between you for that.

council tax 30
Seems cheap for a 3 bed place!

Also need to consider:
TV licence
Clothes
etc etc

I thought after leaving Uni, your supposed to walk into a top, cushy, well paid job.

Pwah, Im glad I never went, I say that as though I could have gone, I couldnt.

But I dont live with Uni mates and worry about earning £900/month.

Good luck, if youve got an education you should use it.

The real world is a scary place

My entire monthly salary is used on bills, mortgage, phone, water, electricity, TV, council tax, train tickets etc etc etc. I wish I had £75 per week left over.

Saying that I spend my girlfriend’s wages when I want to buy something.

Life as all about getting your proprieties right.

Add about £100 extra on your calculations... there's always things that you don't think about!
Your earnings will obviously depend on your job (d'oh! Rachael states the obvious!)... what sort of degree will you get? Maybe its worth looking for a graduate programme with a bank or something like that. While you're waiting, go for the old supermarket option! Try to work nightshift... more money, don't spend so much by going out in the evenings, good excuse to stay in bed all day...
I did nightshift until I got a teaching job. To do a 40 hour week, I would only work for 4 nights, which gave plenty of time for job hunting, filling in application forms etc.

Don't you have your student loan to pay back too, or did you start before all that was introduced for us students?

You can defer payment for student loans until you start earning a certain amount can't you... I think I started paying the APRIL after I graduated, and at about £17.50 a month.... but that was many many years ago... hmmmm

If you earn less than £1500/month gross (approx) you can defer your student loan.

I did for the first year I worked as I was paid just below the threshold. Now paying £150/month on it.

Allow a little more than your calculations, as you'll find ways to spend money.

@borich: you're going to end up pretty hungry or does shopping = food? i think you're missing quite a lot of bills and will be lucky to run a car and 1/3 share in house for £500pcm. hows the gym going by the way? good luck tho

@olly: council tax £30 each for 3 people = £90pcm sounds right to me as thats about what i pay on my 3 bed place?

Our Council tax is £130 per month and that is a 2 bed.

Do you know what band the house is in? They are graded G to A I think.
