Had one around 20 years ago. Basically, they stick a telescope up your bum. They used plenty of Vaseline, but I still decided that gayness wasn't for me

Claire,
from NHS direct site

How it is performed

When you undergo an endoscopic examination, you may be given a local anaesthetic or sedative. A flexible endoscope, which is a long bendy viewing tube, is normally be inserted through a natural opening such as the mouth or anus. It is then guided to the area being examined.

A rigid endoscope is a straight metal viewing tube. Examinations using a rigid endoscope are usually carried out under general anaesthetic. The endoscope is inserted through an incision made in the skin. More incisions may then be made if other instruments such as forceps need to be used. The view of the inside of the body can be viewed through an eyepiece on one end of the rigid endoscope

Before having an endoscope passed through the mouth, you must avoid food for several hours. Food in the stomach can obstruct the doctor’s view. You are usually given laxatives before an endoscope is passed into the rectum and colon.

Good luck

Chip.

P.S . You still off the ciggies??? I bet not!

What I had was a sigmoidoscopy - which they insert through the boys' gate. Thought that was what you were referring to.

Haven't had the "down the throat" job, but I know someone who has had one recently. Plenty of local anaesthetic/sedative helped her. Throat felt a bit rough afterwards, but no problems really.

You are usually given laxatives
She was given laxatives that would stop a hippo! Told to keep very close to a toilet for 12 hours after taking them!

eClaire, sorry bout this but its not good news. I had one to check for stomach ulcers recently. They stick a tube as thick as your thumb down your throat and then put a camera down the tube and other instuments. your throat is sprayed first to numb it, but all you want to do is gag!!!! it was one of the worst experiences of my life. I`d rather it was up the bum good luck
ps:they blow your stomach up with air to look about, you`ll be farting a goodun on the couch believe me

Right I had this about a year ago

2 options

first option a local spray that tastes aweful

second option a sedative [doesn't knock you out]

I turned up with 3 other lads and when the nurse asked I didn't want to be a wuss when the other 3 said local

BIG MISTAKE

It was very uncomfortable and I really didn't like it

on my follow up I had option 2

I was at the hospital for an extra hour but the experiance was a lot easier and because I was relaxed the sore throat I had experianced with option 1 was hardly noticiable

Hope that helps

But Claire,
If only you'd listened

Smoking and drinking excess alcohol leads to a greater risk of developing an ulcer. So stopping smoking and moderating alcohol intake reduces the risk of developing an ulcer

Claire - pack up drinking for a few days and you'll probably be right as rain. if you have bad acid stomach after drinking take some zantac - it really sorts out your insides. i had bad stomach problems during uni and after, due to excessive drinking. often couldn't hold down any food the next day - got very familiar with the birds eye view of the crapper. get rid of the cause and the symptoms should follow.

I drink very rarely though. Twice a month, sometimes less. I went for months without drinking last year!

I have cut down the **** though, i am only on about 5 to 8 a day. I will stop when I am ready, right now I don't want to.

Claire
I have had it done 3 times,1st 2 were done with sedative,i hardly remember them doing it,actually only rememnber being asked to swallow then not alot else,a breeze.
Then 3rd time a bloody doc said it was quicker and easier to have the throat spray,i got to say i gagged the whole time, and eventually pulled the tube out,the doc got the **** and said i was being stupid.Probably one of the worst experience of my life.
Diagnosed with inflamed stomache lining, minor ulser. Now on tablets and have no probs at all,can even drink and have the odd curry.
Do not be persuaded to have throat spray.
Good luck

I don't really care what you think! I smoke, I enjoy it so keep your unwanted opinions to yourself thanks, if I wanted anyones opinion on me smoking I would have set up a thread asking them for it. But seeing as this is about endoscopies......

Endoscopy is the one where they have a look at your esophagus, stomach and duodenum.
Colonoscopy is the one where they stick the thing up your backside to have a look at you colon(large intestine)

I have had an endoscopy done 3 times as I suffer from stomach ulcers, here in South Africa they do a complete sedation (eg they put you to sleep) which in my opinion is the best and least uncomfortable way of doing it.

Colonoscopycan be done both under sedation (if you are having both an endo and colonoscopy done at the same time) otherwise it is normally done just with a light sedative.

Good luck, and be assured that its not so scary/uncomfortable as it all sounds It would be good to know from your doctor if they do a complete sedation as that is the best route to go

I quote Austin Powers:

I'm just trying to get a rise from you. You know, "for ****s and giggles"

I believe the meaning of the phrase has something to do with laughing so hard you **** yourself. I've used the phrase, along with other fine selected Austin quotes many times.

Claire, my best friend had sedation and said she can't remember a thing about the endoscopy. Go for that, and carry on smoking, you'll need it to calm your nerves.
Good Luck

For goodness sake are you mice or men! throat spray tastes like bitter banana, they put a guard between your front teeth to stop you biting the tube, you gag a bit to start but I asked to look at the monitor at the same time, very interesting your insides are, then had half an hour sit down paid the bill and then went shopping at Tesco's, we women are made of sterner stuff than you guys I think, believe me it isn't as bad as you think it is going to be.
