Question Uk Citizenship Ceremony

"The first ceremony for immigrants granted British citizenship has taken place in London."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3487892.stm

What do people think, good or bad?

Not sure I'd be happy swearing allegiance to the queen and I was born and bred here!

Not sure I agree with what they have to do exactly, but I think I agree with the concept, especially the bit about respecting the rights and freedoms here.

Like marriage vows though - can be broken when it suits.

Good idea in principle, but that's about it.

Thats the thing - good in principle but it isnt going to change anyone's attitude that comes to this country. Most will just see it as something else they have to do before they get on with whatever they would have done before the ceremony.

In US the kids swear allegiance EVERY DAY to the flag IIUC. Heard one stroppy teenager cursing how a visiting student on school exchange wouldn't do it - "you're in MY country, you should respect MY flag!". Well durr, it's not her country is it, stupid! You don't swear allegiance to every damn country you visit. Luckily the (US but Hungarian background) person I was with looked at me and said, well sieg heil! - she wasn't impressed either.

At least in America they still have something that passes for national pride! (albeit slightly misplaced and just a little over the top )

lol!! if only it was that easy!!

Immigrant ceremonies are probably a good idea, however they should really be concentrating on cutting numbers and returning failed immigrants first of all.
