Post The Ultimate Pop star C4

Ok, a top 50 based on *sales* since UK charts began. This should finally sort out the men and women from the boys and girlies. At three and a half hours in length I hope so anyway.

Not sure quite *what* sales it's based on. Singles only or singles and albums, but should be enlightening. We'll see.

Can't see it being 50 Cent LOL. Gotta be The Beatles, though Jacko will be a threat. Please not Elton (Diana) John.

Good to see The Shadows are in there. (no, not Cliff bloody Richard) The *only* instumental group in the chart. Hank Marvin is an icon to all guitarists, and with Apache was part of the birth of Hip Hop.

Good to see Frankie Goes To Hollywood and The Jam outsold Robbie Willliams. I bet they didn’t cost x million either, more like x hundred.

Since when has sales been any guide to quality?

Some of the best musicians in the world only sell a fraction of the likes of Michael Jackson/Elton John etc. - it's more about marketing, selling out and what you want from a career than musical talent in a lot of cases.

How else does a caterwauling hellhag like Celine Dion out sell the likes of Diana Krall?

tiggers.

<smashy mode>Too true great mate.... !!</smashy mode> but havin' a pop chart based on sales has gotta be a good way to measure *pop* success.

Why do people get so hung up on "their" choice of music. its "Pop" Popular music. Singles sales are a very narrow measure of success - but a good one for "Pop" singles.

Is it that hard a concept to grasp ?

Remember it's just 'POP' music, not music in general. Lowest common denominator and all that.
