Question Recommendations for sat nav

I'm really looking with a view for my new car in a couple of months time. It looks like I'm going to be doing a fair bit of travelling in my job, so I've been considering some kind of sat nav installation.

My choices at the moment are:

Use a Palm Tungsten with TomTom software. Details here
Go for something like Mapopolis which also uses a Palm, but gets it GPS feed from Road Angel (making it a cheaper setup)
or look at normal in-car systems that replace the stereo (I nearly fell off my chair browsing through the Subaru accessories catalogue and saw the price of the Alpine system!).

What are people using, or what would you recommend? Some idea of pricing and links to good sites would be appreciated.

Cheers

Chris

my 540 has a widescreen TV that plays satnav...compared to my mates ipaq he has stuck on the dash its far better. cant see how you navigate via a dinky screen like that?

if i had no satnav i'd get the biggest car version i could.

Clarion do the NSV613 which is a single DIN unit with 6 inch fold out screen(I think you saw it at the last Meet we went to). Cost was 860 Quid
http://www.clarion-eu.com/uk/Car_Nav...13eb6c7.4.html

For the wife's Forester i've gone and bought a pioneer DVD system AVIC800 DVD and Head unit DVD AVH-P6500DVD ( http://www.pioneer.co.uk/eur/product...nomy_id=25-112 and http://www.pioneer.co.uk/eur/product...nomy_id=25-109 ) Cost was £1800 from MCS direct

If you are on a budget and just need a satnav, then the Clarion is a winner IMHO. If you can go for the pioneer then get that as you get such goodies as DVD and MP3 players plus a more comprehensive satnav directory(Europe instead of just UK)

Cheers Neil - I'd forgotten about that!

Tiggs - I know what you mean - that has bugged me as well. Although I guess clear speech would overcome this to a certain extent.

I'm selling an XDA that runs Tomtom... all you'll need is a lead to connect it to the Road Angel.

If you're interested, that is?

Personally I like the PDA approach, which I use as I use the PDA for work. This way I get more use out of the PDA without a huge outlay and it is easy to take with you and so is less of a target for people with light fingers

Thanks all - still undecided. I'll see what the budget is like after I've bought the car!

Had my Garmin Streetpilot III for nearly a year now and I love it. I got this rather than a built in unit as I drive quite a few different cars in the course of a year and this one is very easy to swap from car to car.

I got mine from http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/ A good site, with some good reviews of the various systems available.
