Thumbs up Youths Standing up for what they believe in!

Recently in my school (Devonport High School for Boys) a member of our school and his friend from (Eggbuckland Community College) decided to stand for youth parliament.

In the manifesto they set out to tackle the issue of the loss of free/subsidised bus fairs, and the fact that school pupils in Plymouth are now having to pay upto £60 per half term (£360 per year) for a school bus pass.

Since they have been elected two weeks ago they have started a petition and have collected over 15,000 signatures opposing this, and have organised a protest to blockade the main round through the city centre. They are expecting around 5,000 people to attend this protest.

All too often, young people making a stand get labelled into 2 pigeon holes:

1) Attention Seeking
2) Trouble

If its something important (as this is to them) then make your stand. Cant say it will have ANY effect, but its worth not beong walked over. And next time, the decision makers may think twice before giving certain groups a less fair deal.

i understand why they're doing what they're doing... and think it's good that people stand up for things. the uk has too much of a reputation to be too passive when it comes to things like this... which is why uk citizens are often getting shafted.

the only thing is... SOMEONE has to pay for the bus fares. either it will be the students or the public in that area through council tax rises. so if the protest works, a lot of the people on the petition (the ones that are adults and pay council tax) will end up bearing the cost. i dont think many people realise this - rather they just think the money will be magic'ed out of thin air.

They will get more support by not bringing the whole of Plymouth to a standstill. Liase with the police and have a march through a recognised/agreed route, otherwise theres criminal charges possible - not a good start to a career. Do it properly and they'll get more support from the whole population, do it wrong & you're a menace and the campaign will fail.
