Can it be done, and what sort of results?

It can be done, I've seen a German website boasting 145BHP and 300Nm for about 800 euros.

Is it just a BMW 320d engine in disguise? If so, what can be done to the beamer unit can be done to the Freelander. Obviously depending if they share similar ECU programming (doubt it).

Yes, I think it is a rebranded bmw engine - as for chipping it, how about chipping it in for something decent!

Edited to add: there are some fairly tasty mods for the 3 ltr BMW diesel, but then it is in a chassis that can reap the benefits.... in a freelander the chassis is like a wobbly strawberry jelly so it would be like trying to polish a turd!
