I got caught speeding on the 18/7/03 doing 48 in a 30 (it had just changed from a 40MPH limit) at 19:26.
I went on a website that said send off this letter asking the police if they had done certain checks.
They replied they had and that I should pay up or goto court.
I then left the country to work in Canada for 3 months on the 7/11/03 and heard nothing more from them until today.
I thought I had got off with it.

Anyway looking through all the evidence including the picture, one one of the letters (notice to defendant) its says im exeeding a 40 MPH speed limit on all of the other's (summons) it says im exeeding a 30MPH speed limit.

Have they messed up or will I have to bit the bullet and take it?

Well without jumping on the usual bandwagon and chastising you for speeding, 48 in a 40 is still the worng side of the law, but i suggest you have a chat with a sloicitor and see if he can pull something off for you
