Just been pulled on the motorway
#1
M1 southbound, wanted to exit the motorway so pulled into the slow lane behind an unmarked 5 series BMW. Followed it for a couple of hundred yards then indicated to leave the motorway, and on come the blues.
Pulled up on the hard shoulder of the slip road, and the offence...........numberplate too small!!!........£30 fixed penalty.
It's good to see the police getting there teeth into serious crime

"If you do wrong expect what you get brigade"
as opposed to what?
if there are laws that are deemed "unimportant" then why have them?
unmarked cars on the motorway are to make sure those on the motorway obey the laws. if nothing major is going on then why not sticj £30 in the pot by nicking those who break the little laws?

GR8 use of resources - NOT. Unmarked car and 2(?)police men for £30.
Wunda if the Police have started keeping these fines as well as
those from speeding offences.

Why don't you have the correct size plate on your car? I thought there was a standard (legal) size for car plates, or perhaps two to allow for the square ones? Confused.

They'll be checking London taxis to see if they're carrying the obligatory bale of hay next - another great British law. Oh and if you're Scottish be careful if you're in York coz you can still be shot there with a bow - legally !! lol

BTW, I run one of my cars without a front plate (there's nowhere to mount it), and I know it's illegal, so if/when I get a ticket for it I can hardly complain, can I?

There's nowhere to stick the front plate on my new Enzo. Guess I'm bu99ered
Edited to add, just checked my MacMerc SLR and that hasn't got a front plate, either!
Thankfully, my Carrera GT and Zonda are okay. Officer
Richard.

Cheers for the support Marv (blackscoobywrx). For the "if you do wrong, expect to get punished brigade", I put the plate on and new it was an illegal size so I accept the fine, but the copper thought he was judge dredd, which I found very amusing, and to pull someone onto the hard shoulder in the snow seems to be overkill. I'm sure that keeping the traffic moving safely in the snow is more important

So why didn't you have the correct size plate on your car? Won't it fit? I don't want to drill holes in one my cars, that's why I don't have a front plate.
Still confused as to why you needed a smaller (illegal) plate.

lol- YOU thought his judge dread impression was funny? i bet him and is mate thought it was funnier!

ps- good point about the snow though, maybe small plates should only be illegal on sunny days....and whats this resources rubbish? when a little old lady asks a cop for directions should he say "eff off granny, im a £25k a year professional....giving directions is not a good use of me as a resource"?

Still not getting an answer here, why do (evidently multiple) people have non-standard sized plates? I can understand not having a plate at all if there's nowhere to mount it, but if you *can* mount a plate, why can't you mount one of legal dimensions? Is the mounting area really that tight on space? Sounds like a crappy design if it is.

Gareth,
Why can you not stick it on with double sided tape, or use a stick on plate (which are still legal btw)..
Not where to stick it, you muppet
I personally would love no plate on the front to help with cooling the fmic but it would just attract too much attention and I would rather my car was not looked at closely they might find other things wrong I haven't noticed etc..
Also if I get stopped for making a mistake.. like accidentally breaking the speed limit I would eat humble pie, in the hope of getting a telling off.. but if I had an illegal plate AND I was going 62mph in a 60zone I have no chance.. lol

Pretty sure stick on plates are not legal here, you have to use the punched metal things the nice convicts make. You can't (legally) get plates from anywhere other than the Dept of Motor Vehicles, and they don't ask what size sir wants when you order a set.
