Boats - licence? where to "drive it" etc
#1
Hello,
I fancy a cheap little boat but I have no idea about running costs of where you are allowed to "drive" it. I don't want moorings or anything like that I will just stick it on a trailer and want to go somewhere quiet, stick the boat in the water, float out a bit and relax. Do you have to pay a water tax or something and where can I find out where I can take it?
Also do I need to pass a test?
Thanks in advance.

Are you on about a speedboat, rowing boat or sailing boat?
No test required - but may be worth getting some training. You may have to pay fees to put it in the water dependign on where you go.
If you have a VHF radio, worth while if you are going out to sea at all, then you do need a licence for that.

You don't need a licence and you don't need to pay a tax. Depending on where you use it and what you use it for you may need to pay fees such as launching, water skiing etc. Some form of 3rd party liability would also be a good idea! Some places on the continent you need a certificate of competance.
You would be well advised to do some sort of course if you have no boating experience. The RYA do various courses.
I spend a lot of time in boats and the clueless tourists do my head in burning around, ignoring speed limits and rules of the road. If I had my way I would give them a broad side of cannon!

I want an engine on it but not a fast thing. Just something with a very small area below deck, a couple of seats up top and thats about it. Like this thing...
