Maths help needed on pop video speed issue pls!
#1
I’m a bit stuck on this percentage calculation so any help would be appreciated!
I have just filmed a music performance where I asked the sound guy to speed the music up by 15% (whilst maintaining correct pitch). My plan was then to slow the pictures and sound down by 15% when I edit it (giving a very suitable slo-mo but in sync'floaty' effect). Unfortunately though the sound guy could not give me the exact percentage he speeded up the music as he worked in beats per minute and not percentages. If you are still with me I need to know what percentage it has been speeded up by if -
Original music was 4 minutes 14 seconds and 14 frames (there are 25 frames in a second)
Speeded up music ended up being 3’ 37” 00f
Also song 2 was 3’ 47” 12f originally and ended up being 3’ 13” 09f
If you can help me with that I would be ever so grateful as otherwise I have to match the pictures to sound by eye – I’ll still be there next Xmas!!!!
Cheers

Which way round do you want it.....
The 3 mins 37 secs is x slower/faster than 4 mins 14s 14f,
where x = 14.75487115021998742928975487115%
Or, the 4 mins 14 secs is y faster/slower than 3 mins 37,
where y = 17.308755760368663594470046082949%
I think
Think for the first song you want the top value cos it's saying 3m37s is 14.75% faster than 4m14s14f

Well I worked it out as follows
1st song orig - 6364 frames
1st song new - 5425 frames
new 1st song is 14.75% slower than the original one
original 1st song is 17.3% faster than the new one
2nd song orig - 5687 frames
2nd song orig - 4834 frames
new 2nd song is 14.99% slower than the original one
original 2nd song is 17.64% faster than the new one
Clear as mud?

So if I slow down the vision by 17.3% and 17.6% respectively for song one and song 2 the pictures should lock up to the untweaked original music?
I’m too thick to get why the percentages should differ if you express it as a speeded up or slowed down percentage – surely it would be a percemtage constant? E.g if the NEW (second) song is made 17.6% faster than the original, then this would make the original look like its 17.6% slower than the NEW one?
Dracoro I think you got them the wrong way round (how ungrateful does that sound!) NEW song would always be faster than the original?
Brain hurts – off to buy cod liver oil and ice!

Diesel,
Depends on your perspective:
SONG 1:
The OLD recording is 17.309% longer than the NEW recording...
-OR-
The NEW recording is 85.245% of the length of the OLD recording...
SONG 2:
The OLD recording is 17.646% longer than the NEW recording...
-OR-
The NEW recording is 85.001% of the length of the OLD recording...
I believe the second sentence, in each case, is the most relevant. He has interpreted your request to mean that you want the length of the NEW recording to be 85% of the old recording, in other words, he has reduced the length of the OLD recording by 15% of the OLD recording!!
My head hurts now...

It depends on your wording. This is a grammatical nightmare!
The first song is made faster, but lasts for a shorter length of time. When you think faster, you normally think higher numbers, but in this case it becomes smaller.
So the original is 4 mins odd, you speed it up, and it becomes shorter. I thought Dracoro got it right???

Regarding the percentage thing. I shall explain why the figures are different.
80p is 20% less than £1
£1 is 25% more than 80p
Make sense (25% of 80p is 20p so 80p + 20p = £1)

WHAT A GANG!!!!! I have the answer now that pleases the editor - basically he tells it to make the pictures play at 85.x% of their original 100% speed and this will match the unmessedabout with original audio track. FAB!
HUGE THANKS!
