What a woman... Got the Le Mans set with 2 Cadillac Northstar prototype cars. Comes with electronic lap counter and fastest lap timer etc. The new sport track is really smooth and clicks together quickly and easily. What's more, a mate who I used to race slot cars with years ago turned up with a Fly Porsche 908/3 in Martini colours as a prezzie which is even quicker than the Scalextric cars.
Going to mount the track on a 10x4 MDF board and keep it in the garage for race nights!
PS I'm only 46 so just a big kid really!

Scaletrix can be as bad as scooby ownership for modifying. Soon you won't be happy with the standard cars and will want the exotic imports which are more expensive, faster and more fragile (sound familiar ).
It was only when we moved house that I realised just how many slot cars I had bought over the last few years.
Not as bad as a mate of mine who liked it so much he bought the company MRRC. They remanufacture the classic scaletrix cars and export them all over the world. I crashed one of his special cars and he informed me that it cost him £300 at a special collectors fair in New York!!!!
Hope your wife don't read this thread.

I must admit, I'm already looking at the various websites that do tune up parts, different controllers etc. The wife just wants me to get her a Scalextric Mini so that's cool.
Havn't got any pics yet (and don't know how to post them) but when the layout is finished I will try and put some on.

The FLY cars are well quicker than the scalextric ones, but as crapaud says they are also more fragile. I've got a Zakspeed Jagermeister Capri, a Gulf Porsche 917K & a Ferrari P3. They are so well detailed I'm scared of using them in case something breaks off.

Scalex....... The 3rd love of my life,
Been collecting this stuff + a bit of buying & selling for about 6 years, have 250+ cars 95% Scalextric old & new.
There's now a big market for this sort of stuff especially 60's & 70's items in good condition. Good / mint James Bond sets now fetch £1,500-£2,000
Also lots of race clubs + slot car only fairs across the country
There's a number of places that sell the new stuff at very good prices compared to your local model shops, let me know if you want more info.
I'm always looking to buy more.....
Check those lofts.....

My wife brought me the Caterham Cup Scalextric last Xmas (bit of a Caterham fan I'm affraid) and I've now managed to collect all the Ford GT40's as well, and a few TVR's . My sons favorite car is the nuber 10 scooby which he likes racing against my Skoda Octavia WRC both have four wheel drive and handle great .

I haven't used such things since a kid... have the tracks, technology changed now, so the old stuff can't be used?
Someone in the pub the other day mentioned that some cars were fixed to the track in some way, which sounds like its gone soft... half the fun was trying to corner so as not to fly off into the skirting boards mid-lap!
I can feel a trip to Toys R Us coming on...

This is a relief!
My Wife bought me one for my birthday last week, and I wasn't prepared to admit it openly, until now! LOL!
I never even asked for it, she just caught me looking at the cars (Scoobs) when we were at a shop with her nephews. She managed to sneak out and suddenly produced this huge, wrapped, box at my birthday party.
Great fun, especially as I have never had one before.
But I have now had to pack it away until we can get the loft sorted as the middle of the dining room floor is not appropriate for long term use!

Duck_Pond,
We had lots of old track and one year my brother and I had two LaMans cars bought for us. These had (I think) MagnaTraction. It was basically a magent screwed to the underside. It was great fun and you could get them cornering pretty fast. We tried it without them one time but we couldn't keen them on the track... Much more fun with it I think...

I had loads and loads of track and about 20 cars or so as a kid and guess what, sold the lot at a boot fair for £50 due to being a money grabbing stupid teenager
Would cost 100's and 100's of pounds now to replace how much I had and thats just the track The cars don't even bear thinking about They would be about 20 years old now so would be some of the old classic stuff like the police rover with the flashing lights etc Would also keep me and my son amused for hours if I still had it now.
I did some feking stupid things as a kid! Glad I still got all my old original Star Wars stuff though

Good to hear so many people are into slot racing. I have started work on the board for my permanent layout and can't wait to get it finished.
Regards a Scoobynet race night - there is a club in Luton at the old Vauxhall social club that has a race night on Mondays with classes for Scalextric type cars. Maybe if there was enough interest we could get use of the track for a evening?

Don't wait for your wife to buy you one, this get down the toy shop and buy a set.
I bought my first set when my son was young. "How old is he?" asked the toy shop owner. "About six hours old" was my honest reply. Got photos of him at 6 months watching the cars wizz around. He's 14 now and buys his own cars. We bought several Ninco Le Mans racers when we at the Le Mans race last June.
The Spanish SCS cars were good. Proper 4WD with twin drives from the electric motors to drive both axles. I've got 2 Porsche 959s that drift out the corners beautifully. Also got large trucks, sidecars, go-karts, numerous rally cars and of course all the F1 cars.
Interesting ones are tyhe 360 degree models. Providing you have enough edging around the track. these cars cars spin through 180 or 360 degrees and race in both directions!
When you get very serious you can alter the gearing, ride height and tyre compounds!!
Its a waste to leave it to kids.

My wife bought me the subaru challenge for my Fortieth. Unfortunately I've never liked scalextric, owing to my family not being able to afford such things when I was little. The only kids who got them were the overprivileged ones that liked to rub your nose in it. The present, with its associations, was a singularly depressing experience- I took it back to Argos. I was gutted to receive the gift; my wife was gutted at my reaction to it. Nightmare. I bought a real Subaru six months later.
