Best places to stay and stuff to do in London.

Alright,
Me and the missus have next week off and as she has never been to London we are planning to go for a couple of days.
Just wondering the best places to stay(reasonable cost) and the best things to do Day/Night.
I have been looking on www.LondonTown.com and some of the deals they do on there for hotels seems a bit suspect,ie,60%+ discount, anybody booked hotels like this before.
Thanks in advance.

I'm an expat Brit with a European wife and we occasionally do the tourist thing in when over in London. Highlights for us have included the London Eye, Frog tours (amphibious tour) and Vertigo 42 champagne bar at the old NatWest Tower in the City. The missus always loves to take in a musical too. Bombay Dreams and Mamma Mia were great and the Springer Opera rude, but good too. I usually shudder at the thought of a load of luvvies singing and dancing around a stage, but its good entertainment when you're actually there.
Can't help with accomodation though coz we always stay with rellies .
Enjoy it. It's a fantastic city to visit as a tourist.

Another Vote for the London Eye.
Walk along the South Bank from Waterloo (?) to Tower Bridge, cross over to Tower of London, then along the embankment to Parliament.
It's been a while, the geography might be a bit off.
Selfridges too.

Quite enjoy walking around Bond St area during my lunch break, the rich folk smell all pretty!
I'm told the aquarium is worth a visit, plus there's any number of galleries/museums, depends what your bag is....

Lab bar in SOHO has the best cocktails and fabbo 1970's decor
How much are you thinking of spending on the hotel £50 per night, £300 or somewhere in between?

You can't miss the Eye - it's fab both in the day and at dusk/night. From there you could walk down the South Bank to various attractions. The Tate Modern (being free) is worth a visit even if like me you think modern art is a pile of w@nk. A bit further down is Southwark where not only will you find Southwark Cathedral, but there's Vinopolis, the interactive wine tasting/learning experience. You could then walk on down to Tower Bridge and jump on the tube into the West End for some food.
Alternatively, from the eye you could walk down to Westminster Bridge and across into Parliament Square. From there you could walk through to Buckingham Palace or up into the West End.
In the West End you've got China Town which is good for a bite to eat, or there's a variety of eateries in Soho.
One thing to remember in London is that you don't have to use the tube that much. Most of the West End and the area along the Thames is easily walkable - and it's far more rewarding. London might not have all the visual appeal of some cities, but it still can be a great city to walk around.

Cheers some good replies,at least i can go with something in mind and not just waste the day.
Hotel wise most of the ones on that Londontown.com were about £100 per room which is good value i thought for london. Just wondered which wre the better located but i guess that doesnt really matter too much.
What would you advise in the evening, which shows are good as i would rather do something like that than go to a pub/club as we can do that anywhere.
Cheers

Lightship10 is a good restuarant - try looking on toptable.co.uk as you can get upto 50pc off, also take a look at londontown.com for cheaper hotel bookings

It really pays to have a good look around all the discount hotel websites.
I've booked a few times and had great deals.
Never paid more than £60 a night for 4* hotels.
We've stayed at Harrington Hall Kensington and The Royal Lancaster both great.
We booked both on-line with no probs.
Just make sure you print out all your booking confirmation screens and e-mails. That way you've got everything you need to sort your booking out when you get to the hotel.
You may have to pay extra for breakfast but not much more generally £10ish.
I tend to see which hotels seem to be on offer across the different sites check out all the descriptions and pictures and you'll soon find one or two you fancy over the others. Do a further search on the ones you like and you may find even better rates.
I can’t for the life of me remember which site I used for the actual bookings but so long as they have a secure transaction section I'm sure they are all pretty much of a muchness!
You could always phone the hotel to confirm your on-line booking. Probably best if make sure you leave enough time for your booking to be processed before you panic when the hotel is wondering what on earth your on about!
I just did an example search for you for a guess date next week tue 20/1 - fri 23/1 with expedia.co.uk
Quite a few 3/4* hotels in decent locations for starting at £60 a night so have a good look round.
You’re bound to find a good deal because you’re booking last minute.
I've just had a look through some of these sites.....
lastminute.com
and they sell theatre tickets.
Londonhotelsite
Hoteldirect
I'm really jealous now!
I've been looking through all these hotel websites an I'm not going not fair lol
You'll have a great time I'm sure.
The Rembrandt Hotel 4* seems to be popping up across the pages and it has spa facilities .....that would be nice
You might not have time but an early morning swim sounds lovely to me!
discountcityhotels
has an offer for it £89 a night.
I feel awful if you stay there and its horrible but it looks nice to me!
Anyone else been there on scoobynet????
By the way you can pre-book a slot on the London eye on the net if you know when you want to go. Saves having to wait ages but we went in the summer so it might not be as busy now.
All we had to do when we got there was shove our credit card in a machine, looks like a cash machine, and we got our tickets easy peasy.
If your going to a show there is a half price ticket place in Leicester Square looks like a public loo!! Its called Tkts.
They have on the day offers if you don’t know which show u fancy you could see what they have there to tempt you.
Have a look at .....
londontheatre info
Hope some of this helps!
Coming from the sticks I love London! I'm sure your wife will too!
Good luck with it
Have a great few days wherever you end up

Millenium wheel is a must. Try to time it to go at dusk. Really good!
Why not stay in a furnished aprtment for a little bit of luxury and superb Thames views.

For a tour of London try the frog. An amphibious vehicle so you get the best of both worlds in one trip.
