Animals seeing things we cant?

What is it with pets! As a kid my parents dog and cat used to freak me out when they used to sit at the bottom of the stairs and stare into thin air both transfixed on something that wasn't there! They always did it when I was in the house on my own and it wouldn't always just be at night time. Would scare the life out of me as a kid!
This experience is now repeating itself in my flat but with totally different pets. W69's rabbit started doing it the other night, it just froze solid and stared at the wall. I didn't really pay much attention thinking the thing is just bonkers. Until last night that is when one of my rats did the same thing and was literally petrified. It sat in the corner of the room pressed hard up against the wall. When I tried to pick him up he was clinging onto a cable for dear life and was solid like he was dead
instead of being the wriggly thing he normally is. I put him back in his cage (in a different room) with his brother and he went back to normal.
I just don't know what the hell it is they can see, whatever it is it freaks animals out big time
I know they is much talk of animals being able to see ghosts/supernatural etc but come on surely there has to be a realistic explanation for them acting weird like this?
Anyone else get this with their pets?

I've never really believed in ghosts and all that malarky apart from my ghost thread I started a long time ago which was just a one off experience thankfully!
I'm not saying I think my current pets and previous pets have been seeing ghosts but something has upset them to make them react they way they do and did!
Just wondered with so many pet owners on here if others had experienced similar behaviour from their family pet?

My dog has freakily just started to bark at nothing before but I just think its boredum or looking for attention, dont look too much into the miind of a dog.
mite have been something they ate that has had an adverse effect on them???? dunno

ajm ud think so but then the change of behaviour is very sudden and it didn't affect the rabbit and the other rat that were in the room next door (door was open and they were only a couple of feet away) so would make sense that if it was sound or smell they would all sense it.
And as for the cat and dog, they would sit side by side at the bottom of the stairs - the only time (apart from when the open fire was on) they would stomach each others company. They were definately staring at something and would do this for a good few minutes before coming out of it and walking off. Even calling them and trying to make a fuss of them wouldnt distract them. Was very strange

Not a ghost story, but animal senses are amazing. I went to a medieval falconry display last year. Talking to the falconer, he said a peregrine's eyesight is sharp enough to see the blink of a pheasant's eye at over 200 yards distance.
They also hunt by looking for urine trails from their prey: the hawk's vision extends into the UV end of the spectrum, so the urine shows up bright silver.

Maybe they can see a smell (like the smoke off bacon when its cooking) does that make sence? maybe they are transfixed to light, say the sun is shining through a window and they see it differently to you or me... does that make sence? like a rainbow to them as an example that they see and find wierd so they sit n stare at it?????

Thanks for the replies. I can't really explain very well their behaviour, its totally out of charachter so not like they have picked up a new smell or anything where you would see an obvious change in their senseslike continual sniffing etc. The rat was literally petrified last night, its body had gone solid like it was all tensed up and would not move when I tried to pick him up.
Like I say the dog and cat when they go spooked were staring up stairs into darkness. No one else was in, no smells were coming from up there plus no light reflections etc. They were staring into complete darkness.
The rabbit for example the other night once out of its stare ran into the lounge,hid behind the tv and just sat there thumping like mad for 5 minutes. He never does this and was totally out of character. Something is spooking them and with the rabbit and rat its been about the same time of night. I will have to see if I can get them to repeat their behaviour at a certain time and then look into what it might be. However there was certainly nothing obvious to explain the cat and dogs behaviour.
And before any one suggests it no I haven't been taking any drugs or been drinking

Humans often do the same, but at least we have televisions to justify that behaviour. 
But more seriously, 2 of our 5 cats do it from time to time, but I would honestly not know why they do it. Not the frightened bit, but looking very worried fixating "something".
Maybe they just need to poo and forgot how to ?

No such things as ghosts (or, no scientific evidence). There are other much more rational explanations for these things.
James Randi has a million dollar prize for anyone who can prove such non-sense [sic]. I think there were some tests on a 'psychic' dog. BTW, he exposed Uri Geller BIGTIME!

You think thats bad, how would you feel if your Rottwieler suddenly got up, took a couple of steps forward and started growling at "something" in the corner of the room with her heckles up

Diablo you know what i'm talking about then! Thank **** someone else has seen such weird behaviour. My labrador never got agressive with whatever he was looking at, was that slightly tilted head and fixed glaze over his eyes. But again when him and the cat did this it was like you say they just got up out the blue and would go and walk to the bottom of the stairs and stare.

My two cats are the same.
I live in a 200year old cottage with a ground floor bedroom off the back of the lounge - this is the oldest part of the house.
My two cats are always in there sat in the centre of the room looking up at the ceiling meowing at the top of their voices?
Spooks the wife when ever they do it, as they seem to both stare at the same point.

Nope no wild rats in my place/loft. The rat last night like I say just froze solid, pretty much like the rabbit did the other night. He was cowering in the corner and when trying to pick him up he was holding onto the cable on the skirting board for dear life! He really didn't want to come away from the wall for some reason.
