That allows them to get away with selling a 10 year old sub with no papers or service history for £1995 when you can get a brand new one for £2,350.
Saw it today in a store in Nottingham.
I've even seen second hand subs going for exactly the same price as a new one!!!!!!

They might be fantastically well made from the finest materials. But they are ugly, ostentatious, pompous status symbols. Poor style and bad taste. IMHO

James Bond has style and if its good enough for him its good enough for me.
I gave£1600 for mine mint with box and papers off a collector.
The thing with Rolex is, You buy a seiko for 250 keep it 3 years it breaks and you throw it away. With a rolex yo pay 1600 keep it all your life and your ungreatfull kids sell it for a lot more when your dead.
Reguards well made not realy my old Omega was far better made and the best way to spot a real Rolex is it gains 5mins a week LOL.

To answer the question though it's supply and demand. Rolex deliberately limit the supply of new watches to the market in order to retain 'brand value'. Waiting lists for some new sports models (like the stainless daytona) approach 10 years...so people pay a premium for immediate delivery.

Chucky has it.
Oh, and for the record, Rolexes are made of a higher grade of steel than Omega's. And my s/s sub runs about 1 second fast per couple of days.
Another reason on the cost is that a 10 year old submariner with FRSH will be just as good as a brand new one, and if recently serviced/polished etc, aside from very subtle differences on the dial, and a different bracelet, it should be more or less impossible to tell which is old and which is new.

Don't really want to get into the Rolex/Omega debate as a good proportion of it is the same badge engineering crap that the likes of BMW sucker a lot of people. Having said that, regarding the

Here we go. The "going into space" test.
Great that you can take a Speedmaster to the moon. Unfortunately they aren't waterproof, so you can take them into space but you can't do the washing up with them
JB wore a Rolex in Ian Fleming's books, coz it was The Best. Same as he drove a Bentley, Aston etc.
He wears a Seamaster now as they are more desperate for advertising and willing to pay more to the film company for product placement
EDIT - poor style and bad taste? A design that hasn't changed since the sixties, and imitated the world over? Sorry, the world outvotes you on that one. I'll agree with the image though.
As for Seiko - I had a fifty quid Pulsar (sister company) which lasted for fifteen years, through everything I threw at it. I have every respect for them.

Well i own a new Rolex which i bought myself for Xmas and think its the dogs!!!!
If you don't like them, cool thats upto you but you can't deny that there a top quality watch which holds it value better than most! I still own a Gucci which cost £800 new and its ten years old and still looks new (it had only one full service), so work that out over the years and it works out cheaper than a new crap watch each year!!! Thats just one of the reasons i spent £3.5k on the Rolex.

Of those friends that have real Rolexes, they all claim that they're shockingly unreliable/poor timekeepers.
I quizzed one particularly wealthy chap why he had a Rolex when they're clearly not very good at their job he said
"When you can afford a Rolex, you don't need to be on time..", which I found amusing.
Still, they're ugly baubles from the medallion man, chest wig 70's throwback IMO.. which probably means they're back in fashion in that kitsch way..

I agree most of these type of watches are nothing but a gaudy show of wealth, the most amusing part is that most of those who aspire to them/own them haven't got any wealth-

I think the gaudy cars with stickers, huge spoilers and all that cr*p are tack as f**k as well. Probably the same people as wear the watches.

I cover me bets by running an Omega Speedmaster as well..along with around 2 dozen other watches I bought because I like
Interesting for nerds perhaps....on my auto-watchwinder the Omega needs to run in a uni-directional winding patern or it runs down even on the winder, whilst the Rolex likes the alternate clockwise/counterclockwise patern. Queer eh? LOL

What a load of old crap- you could buy a £5 casio digital black resin case "classic" and you'd still be wearing it now.
Or a Seiko for £80 of ebay that would still be goig 20 yrs from now.
This is just one of the excuses people use to justify their vanity watch purchase.
Who needs a watch anyway? Only time I ever needed one was when I actually went diving in the red sea.
