When will CRT Televisions become obsolete?
#1
Wanting to upgrade my telly, and was under the impression that CRT would soon be superceded by newer technologies. However, whilst LCD & the like are getting better in quality and cheaper in price, CRTs still seem to have the edge & a decent 32" screen can be had for about £700. This was also the conclusion of a recent Which report.
So, is it worth waiting a little longer, or will CRTs still rule for years?
I know this can't be answered definitively, but I do know that there are a lot Scoobynetters that follow this sort of thing much more closely than I do.

CRTs will be around for years. Worlwide manufacturing will take a long time to replace CRT manufactuing capability with LCD/Plasma and hence prices for CRT will remian low which will continie to stimulate sales ....

LCD/Plasma's need to be at CRT prices. They also need to be proven to be reliable and long lasting.
Bascially, most people looking for a TV have no more than £500 (£1000 tops) to spend. You can get plenty of CRT's for this price but not plenty of LCD/Plasmas (well not any that I know of!).
People often buy a TV to last 5/10 years anyway, hopefully more for most people.
So give it 10 years absolute minimum and that's IF the prices come down for LCD/Plasmas.

Wait until the cost-base is down amoungst the amount currently being paid for CRT's ..
As soon as yeilds & manufacturing techniques are at a level for CRT's the prices will tumble ...
Currently the investment in large LCD's panels in far-east is massive so will not be long ...

I would think around the same time as video recorders, i.e. never. how long have cds been available, yet you can still buy turntables! tape players! reel to reel tape! There will always be a market for crts etc etc in the poorer countries, so will still be made.

I didn't actually buy it from that website. I got a local shop to (almost) price match another internet price I found, & deliver & install. All happening on Friday.
