I'll bite...
It isn't clear to me what you want to do:
A) Take an existing piece of music and break it into parts for remix-type purposes
or
B) Painstakingly build up a new piece of music instrument by instrument.
In either case, if you've already got a computer, an external multi-track tape recorder would only be necessary for aesthetic reasons.

I'll bite too -
No - the ability to do mulitple drop-ins is still illusive on HD systems (the only main exception is IZ/Otari RADAR - if you have to ask how much, you can't afford it!!) - an essential procedure when mutli-track recording (with live instruments/vocals)
As has already been asked, what is the nature of the request - 8 track is better, but more pricey.
Check out Here
Look at the readers ads - recording. Fostex have always been good at 4/8-tracks.
Again, depends on how much you want to spend too.....

You can get 8/16 track 'recorders' for your PC quite cheap.
Although quality will be dependant on quality of sounds card and microphone.
Cheap way to get started I suppose.

As already stated you 'can' do it on your PC, in fact I'm selling my zoom ps-02 3 track device which is an awesome little device for doing vocals and guitar, check it out here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...ory=15199&rd=1 as I am moving to using my powerbook G4, Im not that much better off as I now need a mic/guitar pre-amp and audio interface but thats the way I want to go but for starting out the zoom is superb unit, esp for guitar as its got built in effects and a tuner.
if you want gear I always check out ebay, loot and as SD555 says the sound on sound reader ads, you could also head over to the forums at www.computermusic.co.uk
