What to bring back from Hong Kong?
#1
Hi guys,
Going to Hong Kong soon, and being a cheap ******* (), I thought I might bring something back to sell on E-bay (Not like thousands worth of goods, or anything)..
What do you guys reckon would be cheap in Hong Kong, and of that, what would sell on E-bay for a slight profit?
I don't want to do expensive stuff like in car dvd's or anything like that, so I thought I might get some Hello Kitty stuff, and maybe a few hundred fake jade pendants or maybe buddha statuettes to sell on the wholesale section
What do you guys think?
Is it possible to send a box of stuff from Hong Kong to England if you don't have an address in Hong Kong, if I decide I don't want to take it all on the plane?
Any other ideas?

I have never ever found anything in Hong Kong that was worth bringing back, it's either junk or over-priced i.e same thing in UK isn't much more expensive

Basically, the idea was to buy tacky stuff that would generate some interest on e-bay, such as hello kitty, which according to my wifes friend is cheap in Hong Kong as opposed to say England...
Jade stuff doesn't seem to go at e-bay at all, so I think I'll stay clear of that one

If you guys can't get bargains, it's because you're not haggling hard enough!!
Bargains I've had in the past:
Playstation with 10 games, memory card and extra controller (3 months after release for £180)
Dreamcast with 3 games, memory card and extra controller (6 months after release for £200)
Sekio Kentic watch with half platic, half metal strap(£200, same model turned up in the UK after 9 months for £450)
Sekio Kentic watch with full metal strap (£220, but it hasn't come out in the UK)
Sharp MD player (slimist MD personal recorder at the time £90)
Original Region 3 movies (normally with English subtitles for a few pounds)
Canon IXUS APS camera (cost me £100 when they were £200 in the UK)
Canon IXUS APS camera (£60, after about 6 months Jessops did the same model for £120)
Then there have been Gameboys, MP3 players, CD players, DVD players, etc, etc!

Most camera/video stuff is about 2/3 of the UK price - IF you buy in the right area. If you go shopping in Kowloon, or on HK island, you will be paying tourist rates, and as has been said obove, stuff is over priced. Go shopping in Mong Kok, and it's a different story. Even better if you take a local with you (might be necessary anyway, Mong Kok - aka Ladies Market - is more for locals, so not all vendors will speak English).
I buy all my stuff at the Hollywood A/V Center, who always seem to have the best prices. By way of an example: Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 lens, best UK price £329. HK price £211 .
Edited to say: If you haggle with the guy in the Hollywood A/V Center, you'll get thrown out of the shop - personal experience!!!

If u go to the right places (i.e. where the locals go), then prices are much cheaper than in the UK.
If u want to buy A/V stuff or cameras, goto Mongkok. Don't both with those shops that have big neon signs saying 'Tax Free'. There ain't no tax in HK (VAT nor import taxes). Those 'Tax Free' shops tend to concentrate in Tsim Sha Tsui (Nathan Rd).
If u want to buy computer parts, visit Golden Arcade in Sham Shui Po (opposite MTR exit D). Blank CD/DVD rewritables are very cheap over here (7 quid for a spindle of 50 Verbatim CD-Rs). If u're not worried about warranty, the latest fad in computing circles here is the 60quid oem Pioneer dual format DVD writer.
For R/C cars, hobby stuff, Mongkok is again the place to go. U can pick up any Tamiya/Fujimi/Hasegawa 1/24 car model kits for 10 quid max. R/C car parts & kits are also dirt cheap here, a typical high-grade Tamiya kit retails for 70-80quid. The Tamiya F1 R/C kit sells for 60quid here (it retails at 180quid from Modelsport UK). Others such as Schmacher R/C cars retails for less here than in UK. I can safely say HK is the cheapest place in the world for Hobby stuff.
Apart from the above, we get different styles of Nike trainers compared to Europe. They cost abt 50quid a pair.
If u want some small & cheap stuff to sell, how abt mobile phone straps??? Many many styles are available here, & they cost abt 1 quid each (or less). There are other bits & pieces of girly stuff available in Causeway Bay/Wanchai/Mong Kok.

U can send stuff using HK Post's parcel service. A 20kg box costs HK$459 for surface mail. If u want air mail, u can send a 10kg box for 50quid.
I'm sure there are other ways of shipping cheaply, cos a trend these days are many ppl from Africa coming to HK to buy lots of garments from wholesalers, & then shipping them back to their home countries.
Another thing, u can get a fully-featured Philips all-code dvd player for less than 100quid, & it has worldwide warranty.

AndyTang: Impressive haggling, mate
ScottHerts: If I remember, I will... Already promised to get some Jao, or whatever it's called (not the rice porridge ), for someone
Clarence: That's some excellent information there!! Especially about the R/C stuff and the shipping! I think I'll get what you called 'girlie stuff', as for some reason it seems to sell better on E-bay than other stuff
Will have to investigate the 'backup editions' as well, I think

U can get official Hello Kitty (or other Sanrio) stuff from a shop called Sanrio Vivitrix. That shop is located in Ocean Centre/Ocean Terminal. If u're around during weekends, there are usually roadshows of particular brands of cars in Ocean Terminal.
Of course, there may be other small stuff which u can sell on Ebay. For example, Tomica 1/64 diecast cars. They cost just over 1 quid each here, if it doesn't get sold on Ebay, u can put it in ur own collection. There's a place called Tai Yuen Street in Wanchai, where there are a number of toy stores which sell collectables & toys at attractive prices.

What about a couple of pickups ?
I've heard that you can pick up Dynavectors etc for a fraction of the price + a turntable pickup is tiny so will not take up loads of luggage space.

Can anybody provide links to decent forums/websites about HK. I will be visiting in Febuary and need to do some research.
I will be visting a friend (business associate) and wondered what present should I take him. Somebody once told Whisky is the drink they really like out there. Was thinking of taking some good old scotch Whisky..

Hello
Sham Shui Po is the place to search for back-ups (where the Golden Arcade is). And while you are there you can look at the frogs and turtles being killed and eaten just outside...
Steve.
