The Marina has had loads of money spent on it but I personally never go there as it is crud. The best thing in the marina is a chinese resturant called The Brighton Pagoda. Its wicked Its on a barge and floats as it is still mored (sp?). Really nice resturant.
House/flat prices in Brighton are shocking. Have a look at a few estage agents. or have a look here
1 bed flats start at about £100,000 and go up very quickly. 2, 3 bed houses are about £200,000 and anything more than that gets expensive.
I've lived in Brighton since I was born but I had to leave the area as Brighton is not in the grasps of first time buyers. My girlfriend and I bought a 2 bed house with a garage in Lancing (about 8 miles away) for £129,000, the same house in Brighton would cost about £180,000
e-mail if you want any more details.

As far as Hove goes I'd say the Seven Dials area is best if you can get secure parking with the proerty.
I have a nice flat in the Montpelier Crescent which I rent out- for a good 2 bed with secure parking you are looking at £200,000 I would say. Not bad by London standards but comparing rent to mortgage/capital invested I just can't see much of a profit in it at the moment.
I can't see much profit in a renovation job either- prices are just to high at the moment.
edited to add some other details

I don't live there anymore, I remember the silver classic though- it was always parked down from the post office on Melville Road, had company vehicles when I lived in Brighton/Hove before the parking situation turned desperate. When I return now I can't believe how bad it is.
