#1
i did a few keyboard lessons 20 years ago and can read very simple music and play something as simple as the odd xmas carol!
now my 7 yr old is about to start piano lessons....at 30 do i have any chance of being able to get good enough to entertain myself with a bit of coldplays clocks or will i never get passed merrily we row our boat?
and if there is hope whats the best way? lessons like her or self teach?

There's software out there for this. You play into your PC via MIDI and it leads you through lessons with movies etc, then tests your playing. Brilliant. The one I have is Voyetra Teach Me Piano Delux.

A chap I worked with was into lots of music and decided to learn piano. He had a taste for boogie woogie and stride type music. He managed to get a teacher who would teach him to play this sort of music without getting too tied down with the theory or the "rules" and because he enjoyed it he did well and was motivated to practise.
Might be worth bearing that in mind, if you like professor Longhair then try and get a teacher who will have you playing that rather than Brahms.

My mum took up piano a couple years back at the age of 50 something!
If you want to do it, give it a go. You won't even need to buy a piano if you get a tutor.
Learning a musical instrument is a wonderful thing to do, just do it!

Go for it, but be prepared to be shown up by your child! My missus thought she'd try having lessons at the same time my eldest (then 7) started. Fair to say the youngster pulled away strongly from the line Now my second is about to start lessons (also 7).
You defo need a real piano btw - too many excuses to avoid practicing when you have to switch something on, load up some software etc etc...
