In the UK there is no such law - as long as you have both side mirrors in place, then the rear-view mirror doesn't actually count. Very petty though, especially given the amount of violent and gun related crime over there.
Back to the UK, could you imagine getting £60 and 3 points for having an empty windscreen washer bottle?

Glad I was a bit slow in replying there, It is illegal to have anything on your rear view mirror in this country and you WILL fail an MOT for an airfreshener, and it is also illegal to have an empty water bottle,

Ah yes, sorry, didn't read the article correctly. I thought they meant an air freshener hanging in the rear window, blocking his view from the rear view mirror.
I'll get me coat......
And while I'm out I'll remove the magic tree from one car and the fluffy dice from the other!!!!

In J'Burg, South Africa, I got fined for parking 8" away from kerb. I think limit was 6". When I lived there 100 mph on a motorway = 6 months jail. So there are worse places than UK!

I think there should be a law, dangling something from the rear view mirror is distracting and pointless. I have seem Asian people with what look lise a cd dangling, now that would distract flashing in the sunlight and obscuring a CD sized portion of the view ahead. Anybody know what the CD contains, I have sort of assumed it would be the Koran or something ?

Reminds me of that Novaboy (or whatever the US equivelent is) who got thrown in gaol for his blue light washer jets. Is there a non-compulsory part of police training on DISCRETION ffs.

The police in WA are very over zealous.
My brother lives in Perth & they hate traffic cops with a vengance there. Speed traps are a sport to them & are blatently just for making money.
On one visit there, I was driving behind a truck down a wide road that was straight all the way to the horizon. No other traffic but continuous lines down the middle so no overtaking
I came to a 200yd overtaking lane and went for it. My bro told me to stay under the limit. Sure enough as I overtook, there was a copper standing behind a bush with his radar gun!
Civvies run a lot of the mobile speed traps though, and it is standard procedure to verbally abuse them There locations get reported on the local radio by callers as well.
Would it be legal to do that here? After all, you are just warning of a known accident blackspot??
