....is it getting increasingly difficult to find such properties without subscribing to so-called "property investment companies" who charge and arm and a leg for details?
Am I missing something - can I obtain the same info for free somewhere else?

get to know a few friendly estate agents.
check out property auctions. with the huuge house prices "normal" people are snapping these properties up now as they are affordable therefore property developers are having to search harder than before.
news reckons that house prices are set to rise 5% next year and that 50% of the population thinks that prices will continue to rise steadily/hold station.
