I'm off to Bangkok for a business trip in February and am also in the market for a digital SLR. I was wondering what the score is with Duty Free goods if I lay out the dosh for some kit which goes beyond the normal limits - you know, the perfume/booze restrictions.
How does Duty Free work if I was to buy a ($3200) camera in Bangkok airport and then fly back home with it? I'm in France but this would be the same question if I was in the UK.
Do I have to pay import tax? - seems to defeat the purpose if you ask me but I don't know as I've usually stuck to the limits for booze and gifts.
I will declare the goods as I very, very, often cross international borders and have been stopped by the customs on several occasions and asked to produce documents for my photographic gear so any advice is welcomed.

You must be mad.
Why pay????? send the boxes /paperwork/receipts etc home.
We pay too much tax on everything here in uk as it is.
But you might not get it that cheaper.. If you are in New York or japan then you will save loads.
Happy Christmas.

Happy Christmas to you too Luke and thanks for the reply.
I must declare the goods for the simple reason that if I don't and I get nabbed by the french customs I will pay the import tax (if that is applicable) plus a hefty fine if my papers are not in order. As I said in my post, I cross international borders a lot - every day between France and Switzerland and very, very often around most of the other countries in Europe - so not declaring goods over a certain amount isn't an option. I've been stopped on plenty of occasions by the customs people (I'm sure driving a scoob isn't helping! ) and asked to produce proof for my gear, hence my question.

bankok airport is not so cheap
buy at king power shopping in the city they will give you a slip to give to the tax office at the airport to return all the tax (in thai baht)money exchange next door.
i bought a panasonic digital camcorder for 500 quid and got 50 quid back at the airport it retails for 730 here it, also got a worldwide warranty, i just threw away the boxes so it looked used
and walked it threw, they even went through my bag and never commented about it
they are pretty hot on hooky dvds just now
{I was there a few weeks ago at a wakeboard camp}
one other thing the exchange is far better in thailand than here
also dont let any travel agent talk in to taking dollars, pounds rule
this happen to freind of mine who lost out big time
have a nice trip.
waky
