Question

Haven't played the hi-fi since our last party where the system had a good shakedown It's a Marantz CD 63 Signature and a PM 66 Signature amp, speakers are Mission 702e floor standing (6 months old). When I turn up the volume the sound cuts out altogether, turn it down and it comes back again. I can hear the amp clicking on/off when the sound is cut and returns.

Any ideas - speakers knackered or amp needs looking at?

Kevin.

Kevin,

I have exactly the same setup (except the speakers) and my amp would click and buzz occasionally. Ended up having to get the Amp repaired by Marantz.

Unless you've other speakers to try (or borrow some from a neighbour) I'd suspect the amp.

sounds like the amp is protecting itself and the speakers are not presenting enough resistance. check all the speaker wire connections. if there are no problems here then maybe you have blown a unit. with the volume low, listen to each driver in turn, and see if one isn't working or sounds unwell. mission drivers are quite cheap so if you need to replace one (or two) it shouldn't cost too much. I blew up the tweeters on my missions at parties... twice

Amp sounds knackered, does the amp have currant run drive light on the front??......If so disconect the wires and rewire it, hope this helps.

You have good cd and amp. marantz tend to be the best made stuff around. maybe it could be "Clipping" have you checked the speaker cables etc to make sure they are correctly wired up. Turn any "Loudness" button off...Dont think your has this??? Try some other speakers.

Hmm, could be the speakers then. Certainly when I switch the balance between fully left and right, the right hand speaker is much quieter than the left hand one. I'll get out the meter and check the resistance and see if there's a difference between them.
