Another quick question
How much should a decent secondhand D30 and a D60 go for.
I was flicking through a camera magazine and found a D60 for £1100 . That is the price of a D10.

Used D30s seem to go for about £500 or so. D60s seem to fetch considerably more, which is madness if you ask me - you get more pixels and better long exposure capability, but that's about all.
My D30 could well be FS if you're interested - it works perfectly and has just been serviced. I've recently upgraded to the 1D and can't really justify keeping both. Mail me for more details.
Andy.

Hehe... looks like I left my office PC logged in as my old alter-ego for some reason Look at that registration date, I must have been one of the first here, before I forgot my password and had to pick a new name

Thanks for the reply Andy,
I was about 95% sure that I wanted a film (EOS 5) and then thought about digital again Still not sure though.
I was looking at the D60 and D30's as I can't afford the 300D (about £900 including a lense) or 10D (£1200 body only)
This may all sit on hold again for a while anyway as our double glazing needs replacing and that is going to cost us a pretty penny or too
How much were you looking for, e-mail if you like.
Darren

I'd get the D30 from Fixation, then. They're going for more like £500 on eBay, so I can't think of any reason to sell for any less.
£350 is disgustingly cheap really - I paid £1800 just two years ago and there's still nothing (apart from its replacement) that delivers images half as good. I only upgraded to get the high speed and better AF for motorsports, and even then I have to admit to a slight attack of 'gadget lust' too

Hmm... This has got me thinking. Will a D30 suffice for most keen users? What's the noise like compared to the D60, as that's what I'm finding the Fuji 6900z continually lets me down on...

Yes, it will suffice - it's a proper SLR, after all, so you have the complete EOS range of lenses and accessories to choose from. No other camera even close to the D30's price offers that.
Noise levels are extremely low - remember that the D30's pixels are twice the area of the D60's, so even though the D60 is newer, noise levels are similar. That means virtually no noise at all at ISO 100 and 200, excellent ISO 400 and a very usable ISO 800. ISO 1600 is there if you need it.
I'm happy to send you an example photo or two if you like.

Interesting stuff!
Just bought a D60 body, + extra battery grip, mint, boxed etc for £500 so I think I got a bargain! Just added a Sigma 28-175 (I think!) lense and the pics are awesome! Well pleased!

Thanks for the replies.
If our windows did not need replacing I would have the D30 straight away.
Mossman, where did you get a D60 with all that kit for only £500? They are going on ebay body only for over £600.
Ru$$Rip - No sudden intrest from me, I've been considering this for months

Call that an early registration date Andy
eBay seems to be pretty much top book for Canon digital bodies - even Jessops seem to sell them cheaper !
D30 & D60 are both excellent cameras - don't be put off by 3mp on the D30 - it will be fine up to 10x8 or so. The high pixel coung on compacts is not really comparable. they use much smaller sensors and the lenses are crap.

Chiark - I went from Fuji 4900 to D30 - you won't look back.
I payed 1150 for mine from Jessops used stock last year. 500 or there abouts is cheap as chips for a 'proper' DSLR.
Coupled with a 70-200 2.8L IS you can do this:

Not on eBay it isn't Andy.
I picked mine up last year and I've just added a 16-35 2.8L to the collection at 600 quid under retail. The seller was a overseas student 40 miles from me originally from Hong Kong and importing these and others on every trip home. Drove over to his place, telephone banked the transfer, jobs a goodun.

Luke are you selling already? Also, (and I may be wrong) the Kodak 520 is basically an EOS1n. Is that correct? I found this on ebay but I can't work out what makes it a digital camera as the 1n is a film camera.
Ian - some nice pics and that student is a handy person to know

I have just ordered a Canon EOS 10D and can hardly wait for it's arrival (beginning/mid January 04). The body itself including 1 Gb Compact Flashcard was around £ 1'000.-- along with the EF 28-135 IS USM image stabalized objectve (another £ 350.--). The forum at 'www.dpreview.com' helped to underline my decision. Cheers, Danny

happy Christmas to you
No not selling...yet!! Ive been offered a fully mint boxed canon 1d afetr new year for £1300 and might chip some of my old stuff in for it. Just got a nice 75-300 image stabalizer about 10 min ago for Christmas!!
Ok. The 520 was around £14k new..!!!!!!!!!! yep 14 thousand pounds.
Its got a Eos1n body, so you have maybe the best body in the world. Kodak did the rest. Its a 2.2 million pixs camera designed for sport action/press work. Its as fast as hell. Stops after around 15 pics to load up.(Couple of seconds. Must be hitting 4 frames a second. The sensor etc is far better made than the new cheaper DSLR's. The focus..well it ****s all over a 10d in low light. The new cameras hunt around for ages trying to sort things out.. Its built like a tank and will last forever.
If the 1d comes up then I will sell. But I only like pro bodies. the rest dont inspire any confidence!!!
Cheers

Dr_Ming, thanks!! I am sure that I will be very happy with the 10D.
Being totally new to the DSLR-Scene, I know that the 10D will give me everything I want and even more (I am sure that this camera will be a keeper for me for a long time!).
As for the 300D (Digital Rebel), I heard almost always only good stuff (checking out several DSLR-Forums). Knowing that the divers objectives and extras will be the most expensive items in the end, I am sure that the 300D is a very good base to build up your individual collection of items. The 300D is a steal for what it can do!! Cheers, Daniel.

The 300D is good and delivers excellent images, BUT:
There are complaints from owners about the features, especially the way that the focusing system works. It doesn't allow manual selection of one-shot vs continuous AF, which means that even the most basic focus-lock-and-recompose technique is made difficult. The camera tends to detect that the subject has moved, and switches automatically into continuous AF, which makes it difficult to focus on an off-centre subject at all.
The 300D also doesn't allow flash exposure compensation to be set, so you're at the mercy of the somewhat unpredictable Canon E-TTL system for flash photos. The only fix here (that I'm aware of) is to use an external 550EX flash, which allows compensation to be set on the flash itself. The 550EX, however, is as big and heavy as the 300D itself.
If you're just after a point & click camera which takes a range of lenses and delivers superb image quality, then by all means go for the 300D - you'll love it. Personally I think I'd soon find its limitations annoying and would wish I'd gone for the 10D instead. If the 10D is out of your price range, consider a used D60 or even D30 instead. The D30 has the particular advantage that your memory cards will be able to hold twice the number of images. Do ask if you'd like to see any sample photos from any of these cameras - SN has owners of all of them.
