Petplan all the way. Have 3 cats insured under them. The vet advised us to go with Petplan as they offer more comprehensive cover, which may not be the cheapest, but at least we know its all covered.
Have had about 2500 quid out of them in the last 3ish years !!
Petplan have some offers on like 1st month free if you apply online at the mo.

I've used Tescos for one of ours, a 22 month old bullmastiff and I pay £18 per month for him. I've got another 10 month old bullmastiff which I haven't bothered insuring.
The worst I've had was a few grand for cancer treatment on a previous bullmastiff that was not insured. At the time it was a lot of money at the worst possible time (we were just about to buy a new house and we almost lost it because of how expensive the treatment was). I'm still not sure if insurance is worth it though IMO. Bullmastiffs are prone to cancer, both of our first two having to be put to sleep because of it, even after lots of treatment, so I just accept it as a cost of having the dogs I suppose.
I haven't read my policy from cover to cover but I'd expect when mine get to a high risk age (5+ maybe?) the premium will rocket or they'll exclude certain illnesses. I only insured this one incase he ran into the road and caused a crash or something. I'm not sure but does your house insurance cover that?
I don't think I'll bother again because I like a gamble which is exactly what insurance is. They set the premiums "betting" they will collect more than they pay out.
