Just checked my logs.... 598 since midnight last night!

Thankfully my mailfilter (custom Perl script using Mail::Spam:Assassin library) only lets through about 10 per day

It depends on your setup. I've got my own domain so everything@mydomin.com comes to me. When I changed to broadband I just created some inbox rules to delete all of the rubbish by changing my address for useful emails to somethingelse@mydomain.com

If you dont have broadband or your own domain, so you are stuck with one email address, see if your ISP offers a webmail facility. Just go online and view the subject headers and who it is from and delete the rubbish before you download.

I have my own domain too. My filter runs on the server (via .qmail) every time an email is received and if it fails the spam tests it is bounced. That way I never even see the mails or download them.

Ah, right. Sorry I thought you were referring specifically to Hotmail accounts.

About 300 a day and I am sick and tired off them. If someone can suggest a relatively idiot proof method of eliminating them I would be most grateful. I have followed previous threads on here but many of them are above my not-in-IT intellect or ability. I use a crude word filter but of course all the "pen1s" and "v,iagra" ones still get through. Have discussed with my ISP and they do not offer a filter saying thay are either "too good" and I will lose genuine messages, or not good enough. David

I get about 80 per day but I am using Spamnet which cuts them down to about 5 or so.
If I had used every pill or patch, my kn0b would probably encircle the earth twice by now!!
Does anyone actually know anyone who has tried these, I recon they are probably a placebo, but they work on the theory that no one will have the courage to go back and say "erm excuse me, I want to take you court as your drugs don't work, and I still have a small kn0b"
Thats my theory anyway

Scene: A cafe. One table is occupied by a group of Vikings with horned helmets on. A man and his wife enter.

Man: You sit here, dear.
Wife: All right.
Man: (to Waitress) Morning!
Waitress: Morning!
Man: Well, what've you got?
Waitress: Well, there's egg and bacon; egg sausage and bacon; egg and spam; egg bacon and spam; egg bacon sausage and spam; spam bacon sausage and spam; spam egg spam spam bacon and spam; spam sausage spam spam bacon spam tomato and spam;
Vikings: (starting to chant) Spam spam spam spam...
Waitress: ...spam spam spam egg and spam; spam spam spam spam spam spam baked beans spam spam spam...
Vikings: (singing) Spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam!
Waitress: ...or Lobster Thermidor a Crevette with a mornay sauce served in a Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pate, brandy and with a fried egg on top and spam.
Wife: Have you got anything without spam?
Waitress: Well, there's spam egg sausage and spam, that's not got much spam in it.
Wife: I don't want any spam!
Man: Why can't she have egg bacon spam and sausage?
Wife: That's got spam in it!
Man: Hasn't got as much spam in it as spam egg sausage and spam, has it?
Vikings: Spam spam spam spam (crescendo through next few lines)
Wife: Could you do the egg bacon spam and sausage without the spam then?
Waitress: Urgghh!
Wife: What do you mean 'Urgghh'? I don't like spam!
Vikings: Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!
Waitress: Shut up!
Vikings: Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!
Waitress: Shut up! (Vikings stop) Bloody Vikings! You can't have egg bacon spam and sausage without the spam.
Wife: (shrieks) I don't like spam!
Man: Sshh, dear, don't cause a fuss. I'll have your spam. I love it. I'm having spam spam spam spam spam spam spam beaked beans spam spam spam and spam!
Vikings: (singing) Spam spam spam spam. Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!
Waitress: Shut up!! Baked beans are off.
Man: Well could I have her spam instead of the baked beans then?
Waitress: You mean spam spam spam spam spam spam... (but it is too late and the Vikings drown her words)
Vikings: (singing elaborately in RealAudio) Spam spam spam spam. Lovely spam! Wonderful spam! Spam spa-a-a-a-a-am spam spa-a-a-a-a-am spam. Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Spam spam spam spam!

I get about 200 emails a day on my personal accounts, mostly SPAM.
About 3 months ago I decided enough was enough and I install a product called SPAMWEED. This now sweeps my email, learns as it goes (or can be over-ridden) and means I get about 10 real emails a day and 190 emails that are deleted.
Note I say deleted, as one of the big plus points of this product is that it doesn't pop your email until it knows it's legitimate, it merely pulls down the header and uses that to decide. So no more long email downloads while the spammers swallow up my bandwidth.

More info here:-

Question

Ok so here is an example. I get loads with no header. 99% are junk but sometimes a genuine one - how would spamweed sort that? Same with Hi as a header. I can quickly find out by right clicking on properties and then message source but not by looking at header alone. I will look at Spamweed site in the meantime. Thanks. David

By default Spamweed considers empty subject emails to be SPAM (not usually wrong). It also uses the source email address.
When I refered to it downloading the header, I should have said this includes the source email address and destination address.
Most of the algorithms in Spamweed seem pretty good at figuring out and learning. Occasionally I have a wrong result, but after about 2-3 weeks of 'training' it I now rely on it completely.

Spambayes is open source, free and devastatingly effective. I can wholeheartedly recommend it, especially if you're using outlook.

Thanks SS. Where did you buy Spamweed from? On line in $ or is there a UK retailer?

Where do I find Spambayes?

Some corner shop I guess

Got fed up with Outlook Express and installed Eudora 6 - the automatic spam filters are doing very well and appear to be learning as they go.

Re: Spambayes

Windows installer wouldn't work (WinXP, OfficeXP) , so I had to go down the sourcecode/python install route. Not difficult by any stretch though, the instructions are good.
