I'm off to Oz after Christmas to spend some time with the in-laws. They have suggested I get an international driving license so that I can drive their cars.

Is this needed?

regards,

greg

"Make sure you have a valid driving permit
If you have an International Drivers Licence it will be honored by Australian law provided you are in Australia for less then three (3) months. If you plan to stay in Australia for more than three months and intend to drive for that period you are required to obtain an International Drivers Permit.

An International Drivers Permit is written in nine languages and serves as an officially recognized translation of your licence."

I've hired a campervan in Oz with just the standard UK licence. Unless anything's changed in four years, the International Licence isn't essential.

The information might be here.

I think you will find that a UK licence is just fine. But for a mere few pounds you can get an international licence from the RAC give em a call they will send you a very simple form and you return it with a recent passport type photo and in a few days you will have an international licence valid for one year. It is worth it just for I think it was £4 or a little more you would have peace of mind.
